How to Set Up MT5 for Gold Trading: A Step-by-Step XAUUSD Setup Guide

MetaTrader 5 works for gold out of the box, but a few minutes of setup prevent the mistakes that cost money later: the wrong symbol, a chart without the ask line, a default lot size of 1.00, or a contract size you never checked. This guide walks through a clean MT5 setup for XAUUSD, using the menu names in MetaQuotes' own help.

The short answer

To set up MT5 for gold: log in, show XAUUSD in Market Watch, check its Specification, open a chart and turn on the Ask price line and period separators (F8), save a template, set a small default volume (Tools → Options → Trade), and practise the New Order window (F9) on a demo account. It takes about fifteen minutes and prevents most beginner execution mistakes.

Menu names below follow MetaQuotes’ MT5 help. Your provider’s build can label a few items slightly differently; if a label doesn’t match, look for the closest equivalent.

Step 1: install MT5 and log in

  1. Download MT5 from your provider’s website or from MetaQuotes. Your provider’s download is often pre-set with its server list, which saves a step.
  2. Open MT5. If the login window doesn’t appear, go to File → Login to Trade Account.
  3. Enter your login number, password and choose the server your provider gave you. Real and demo accounts use different servers.
  4. Check the connection in the bottom-right corner of the window: it should show a data figure, not “No connection”.

Master vs investor password. The master password trades. The investor password is read-only: anyone using it can see your account but cannot trade. If a mentor or friend needs to see your account, share only the investor password.

Step 2: show gold in Market Watch

  1. Open Market Watch with Ctrl+M.
  2. If gold isn’t listed, right-click in Market Watch → Symbols, search for “XAU” or “gold”, select it and click Show Symbol.
  3. Some providers use names such as XAUUSD.m, GOLD or XAUUSD+. Our guide to adding gold to MT4 and MT5 covers every naming variant and the “symbol not found” fixes.

Step 3: read gold’s Specification

Right-click gold in Market Watch → Specification. Write these down; they change everything about sizing:

Field What it tells you What to look for on gold
Contract size Ounces per 1.00 lot Usually 100, but check
Digits Decimal places in the price 2 means one point = $0.01
Stops level Minimum distance for stops, in points 100 points = $1.00 on a 2-digit quote
Minimal volume / Volume step Smallest lot and the increments Often 0.01
Swap long / Swap short / Swap rates Overnight financing and the multiplier for each weekday The day with a ratio of 3 is the triple-swap day
Sessions (lower part) Quoting and trading hours per weekday Shows the daily break in server time

With a 100 oz contract, $1 = $100 per lot, $0.01 = $1 per lot. The gold pip calculator converts any move into dollars for your size.

Step 4: set up the chart

  1. Drag gold from Market Watch onto a chart, or right-click it → Chart Window.
  2. Press F8 to open the chart Properties. On the Show tab: - Tick Show Ask price line. Charts are drawn from the bid, but buy orders fill at the ask, and the stop-loss on a sell (short) position is triggered by the ask. Without this line, a short’s stop can look untouched when it was hit. - Tick Show period separators (or press Ctrl+Y) to mark each trading day. - Untick Show grid (or Ctrl+G) for a cleaner chart. - Tick Show trade levels, so entries, stops and targets are drawn on the chart. - Tick Show OHLC if you want the current bar’s values at the top.
  3. On the Colors tab, choose a scheme you can read for hours. That’s personal.
  4. Pick your timeframes from the toolbar. A common gold stack is Daily, H1 and M15; see the best timeframe for gold trading.

Step 5: save a template and a profile

  • Template: right-click the chart → Templates → Save Template, and name it, for example “gold-clean”. A template stores the chart type, colours, scale, indicators with their settings and any EA attached.
  • Default template: saving it as default.tpl makes every new chart open with this setup, per MetaQuotes’ help.
  • Profile: a profile saves your whole workspace, every open chart and its layout. Use File → Profiles → Save As and name it, for example “gold-day”. Changes to open charts are saved automatically to the current profile.

Installing indicators and moving templates between computers is covered in how to install indicators and templates in MT5.

Step 6: set safe trading defaults

Open Tools → Options → Trade:

  • Volume: set your default lot to the size you normally trade, for example 0.01 or 0.10. A default of 1.00 lot on gold is $100 per $1 move.
  • Stop levels: you can set default stop-loss and take-profit distances here, in points or prices. If you use them, check they suit gold’s volatility.
  • One click trading: leave it off while you learn. Our one-click trading guide explains the risks and how to set it up safely later.

Under Tools → Options → Notifications you can link your phone’s MetaQuotes ID and tick Enable Push Notifications, so alerts set on the desktop reach the MT5 mobile app.

Step 7: walk through the New Order window

Press F9. The fields, as MetaQuotes describes them:

  1. Symbol: check it says your gold symbol.
  2. Type: an execution mode (for example Market Execution) sends a market order; choosing a pending type places a limit or stop order.
  3. Volume: your lot size. Check it every time.
  4. Stop Loss / Take Profit: set as prices. For a buy at $4,000.00 with a $10 stop, the stop is 3990.00.
  5. Fill Policy and Deviation may appear depending on your account’s execution mode.
  6. Click Sell by Market or Buy by Market (or Place for pending orders).

Then open the Toolbox with Ctrl+T and check the Trade tab: the position should show your stop and target. Our guide to setting stop-loss and take-profit on gold in MT5 covers modifying them, and invalid stops on gold explains the most common rejection.

Step 8: know where to look when something fails

  • Toolbox → Journal: connection and platform messages.
  • Toolbox → Experts: messages from EAs and scripts.
  • Toolbox → History: every order and deal with prices and times, which you need for checking execution quality.

Error messages and codes are explained in MT5 gold errors.

Practise before going live

Run the full routine on a demo account first: open, modify and close ten small gold trades, including one pending order and one trade with a stop and target. Our 30-day XAUUSD demo account plan gives a structure.

Frequently asked questions

How do I set up MT5 for gold trading?

Log in to your trading account, show XAUUSD in Market Watch, open its Specification to check the contract size and minimum volume, open a chart and turn on the Ask price line and period separators in Properties (F8), save the chart as a template, set a small default volume under Tools, Options, Trade, and practise the New Order window (F9) on a demo account.

What is the difference between the master and investor password in MT5?

The master (trading) password lets you trade and change settings. The investor password is read-only: whoever logs in with it can see the account, charts and history but cannot place or close trades. Share only the investor password if someone needs to view your account.

What chart settings are best for gold in MT5?

There is no single best set, but useful ones for gold are: Show Ask price line on, so you can see where buy orders fill and where the stop-loss on a short is triggered; Show period separators on, to mark each day; Show grid off for a cleaner chart; and Show trade levels on, so your stop and target are visible.

What lot size should I set as default in MT5?

Set the smallest size you normally trade, often the minimum volume shown in gold’s Specification. On a 100 oz contract, 1.00 lot is worth $100 per $1 move, so a default of 1.00 can turn a misclick into a large position. Change it under Tools, Options, Trade, Volume.

Why is MT5 time different from my local time?

MT5 shows chart and quote times in the trading server’s time zone, set by your provider. Many servers are a few hours ahead of UTC so that the daily candle closes at the New York daily break. Your local time is not used for charts.
