The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes the October consumer price index at 8:30 am Eastern Time on Tuesday 10 November 2026. New York has been on standard time (UTC−5) since 1 November, so that is 13:30 GMT. In India it is 19:00 IST, in Dubai 17:30, in Nairobi 16:30, in Johannesburg 15:30 and in Kuala Lumpur 21:30.
If you watched the September report on 14 October at 18:00 IST or 12:30 GMT, take note: this one comes one hour later on your clock. The CPI event page has a “next release” countdown and a calendar file you can add to your phone, and the CPI day playbook is the step-by-step plan for the day. This page is the clock.
CPI time in your country
Every time below is converted from 13:30 UTC on 10 November 2026 with the IANA time zone database (Python zoneinfo), which knows each country’s current daylight-saving rules. “Spreads often widen from” is 15 minutes before the release. “One hour after” is when the first wave of the reaction has usually passed.

Sydney and Auckland are the only cities in the table where the report falls on Wednesday local time. If your city is missing, the gold economic calendar shows every scheduled US release in your browser’s own time zone, and the gold market hours tool converts the trading sessions.
Why the time moved this month
- The US left daylight saving time on Sunday 1 November. New York went from UTC−4 to UTC−5, so every 8:30 am release moved from 12:30 to 13:30 GMT.
- The UK and the EU changed a week earlier, on 25 October. London is back to five hours ahead of New York.
- India, the Gulf, Africa and most of Asia never change their clocks. For readers there the whole shift comes from the US side: one hour later than in summer.
- Sydney is on summer time while New York is on winter time, which pushes the release past midnight there.
We explain the full set of new session times in the US clock change guide.
What CPI is, in one minute
CPI (consumer price index) measures how much the prices of a basket of everyday things, such as food, rent, fuel, cars and services, changed for US city households. The BLS collects the prices every month and publishes the result about two weeks later. The CPI glossary entry has the longer definition.
Traders look at four numbers:
- Headline CPI, month on month. The change from the previous month, seasonally adjusted. This is usually the first number on the screen.
- Headline CPI, year on year. The change over 12 months. This is the “inflation rate” you hear on the news.
- Core CPI. The same, without food and energy, which jump around. Central banks watch core closely because it shows the trend.
- The parts. Energy, gasoline and shelter (housing costs) explain why the headline moved.
What the last report showed
The September 2026 report, published on 14 October, showed these numbers, according to the BLS release:
| September 2026 CPI | Month on month | 12 months |
|---|---|---|
| All items (headline) | +0.6% | +3.7% |
| Core (no food or energy) | +0.3% | +2.6% |
| Energy | +5.2% | +20.4% |
| Gasoline | +9.1% | +34.2% |
| Shelter | +0.4% | +3.2% |
The big gap between headline (3.7%) and core (2.6%) tells the story: fuel drove most of the rise. That matters on 10 November because oil has swung hard since then with the Iran conflict, so the energy line could again decide whether the headline surprises. We do not publish forecasts for the number: check the consensus on the morning of the release in the economic calendar or the daily gold news.
Why CPI moves gold
Gold pays no interest. When inflation runs hot, markets expect the Federal Reserve to keep rates high or raise them, and that tends to lift Treasury yields and the dollar. Higher yields make holding gold more costly compared with bonds, and a stronger dollar makes gold more expensive for buyers outside the US. A cooler-than-expected CPI usually works the other way.
This year the link is direct: the Fed raised rates in September, held them at 3.75–4.00% on 28 October with two officials voting for another hike, and the December decision on 9 December is close. CPI on 10 November is one of the last big numbers before that meeting. Our December hike odds explainer and gold and Fed rate hikes guide cover that chain in detail.
The surprise matters more than the number. A 3.5% reading can lift gold if markets expected 3.8%, and push it down if they expected 3.2%. That is why the first minute after 8:30 am New York is so jumpy: prices adjust to the gap between the forecast and the actual figure.
What gold did in the last 12 CPI hours
These numbers come from our CPI event page, which measures COMEX gold futures (GC) on one-hour bars. “Release hour” is the bar that contains 8:30 am New York, compared with the previous hour’s close. “Session” runs from 6 pm New York the evening before to 5 pm New York. Data as of 5 November 2026; the page keeps updating after each release.

| Fri 11 Sep 2026 | +$55.3 | $99.6 | +1.16% | $111.9 |
| Wed 12 Aug 2026 | +$25.9 | $59.3 | +0.93% | $81.3 |
| Tue 14 Jul 2026 | +$45.8 | $82.7 | +1.24% | $122.1 |
| Wed 10 Jun 2026 | −$0.6 | $45.3 | −4.45% | $191.0 |

| Fri 13 Feb 2026 | +$19.6 | $47.4 | +2.12% | $162.0 |
| Tue 13 Jan 2026 | +$17.5 | $30.2 | −0.31% | $67.3 |
| Thu 18 Dec 2025 | +$15.6 | $29.1 | −0.17% | $71.5 |
| Fri 24 Oct 2025 | +$20.5 | $36.7 | −0.13% | $103.3 |
What the table says, in plain words (our calculations from the rows above):
- The release-hour range has a median of about $41. Half the reports moved less than that inside the hour, half more.
- The last four reports were bigger: release-hour ranges of $59 to $100 from July to October 2026, as gold became more sensitive to inflation and hike bets.
- The hour closed higher 8 times out of 12. That is not a pattern you can trade on its own. Twelve releases is a small sample, and the direction depends on the surprise.
- The session can tell a different story from the hour. On 10 June the release hour barely moved (−$0.6), but the session fell 4.45%. The first reaction is not always the final one.
- Whole-session ranges had a median of about $101.

A worked example: what a CPI hour means for your account
Here is a simple, made-up example with real contract maths. On a standard XAUUSD contract, 1 lot is 100 ounces, so a $1 move in gold is worth $100 per lot, and 0.01 lot is worth $1 per $1 move. Your platform’s contract size may differ: check the symbol’s specification first.
Account: $1,000. Plan: risk no more than 1% ($10) on any trade. The CPI hour: suppose gold moves in a $41 range in the release hour, the median of the last 12 reports.
- With 0.10 lot, a $41 swing is $410, or 41% of the account. One bad fill could cost far more than the plan allows.
- With 0.01 lot, the same swing is $41, or 4.1% of the account. A $10 stop would allow only $10 of adverse movement, which the first minute of CPI can easily take out.
- The honest conclusion: on a $1,000 account, even the smallest size is large compared with a normal CPI hour. Many traders simply wait until the first hour has passed.

A simple plan for 10 November
- Set an alarm 30 minutes before your local release time from the table above.
- Check the forecast for headline and core CPI, and note last month’s figures (3.7% and 2.6%).
- Decide before 8:30 am New York whether you will trade at all. “Wait one hour” is a valid plan.
- If you have open trades, check your stops. Spreads widen around news, and stops can fill worse than their level. Our guide to why the gold spread widens on news explains what happens.
- Do not enter in the first minute. Prices often jump one way and then the other while the market reads the details.
- After the first hour, look at the structure. Has gold broken a level from the weekly cheat sheet or the chart of the day? Is the move holding?
- Write it down. Record what CPI showed, what gold did and what you did in your trade journal.
Do not place orders on both sides of the price just before CPI (a “straddle”). In fast markets both can fill, or one can fill far from its price. Our test of news straddles on real releases shows why this blows accounts more often than it pays.
Common mistakes on CPI day, and the better way
| Mistake | Better way |
|---|---|
| Using the old summer time (18:00 IST, 12:30 GMT) | Use the table above: 13:30 GMT, 19:00 IST until March |
| Trading the first spike | Wait for the first hour, then judge the move |
| Normal lot size on a news day | Cut size, or stay flat; size from the range, not from hope |
| Watching only the headline | Check core CPI and energy too; they can point the other way |
| Forgetting what is next | NFP was 6 November; PPI is 13 November; the Fed decides 9 December |
What comes after CPI
CPI is not the last word before the Fed. The PPI (producer prices) follows on Friday 13 November, and PCE inflation, the Fed’s preferred measure, comes on 25 November. You can see all of them, with gold’s past reactions, on the gold events hub. If you are new to news days, start with the event-day playbooks and the trading psychology hub, because the hardest part of CPI day is usually staying out of the first minute.

Key takeaways
- US CPI for October: Tuesday 10 November 2026, 8:30 am New York = 13:30 GMT = 19:00 IST = 17:30 Dubai.
- It is one hour later than the September report on your clock because US clocks went back on 1 November.
- The last report showed 3.7% headline and 2.6% core; energy drove the gap.
- In the last 12 releases, gold’s median release-hour range was about $41, and the last four were bigger.
- Size small, wait for the first hour, and know your plan before the number lands.
