Gold Week Ahead: Fed Decision Week — Can XAUUSD Break $4,200? (Oct 26–30, 2026)

Gold spent the week boxed between $4,100 and $4,200 after a hot CPI and an even hotter PPI. Next week brings the Fed decision, GDP and PCE back to back — and a one-week clock mismatch that shifts every session time. Here's what matters and when.

This week in one minute

  • Gold went sideways. XAUUSD spent the week trading roughly between $4,100 and $4,200, and was near $4,163 on Friday, heading for a small weekly loss.
  • Inflation stayed hot. After September CPI came in at 3.7% year on year, producer prices (PPI) jumped to 6.3%. That keeps pressure on the Fed.
  • But hike odds for October faded. Markets trimmed bets on an October hike to around 16%, while a December hike is still priced near 89%. Softer comments from Fed officials and a weaker dollar helped gold hold its ground.
  • The dollar index slipped to around 101.6, its lowest since early October, on track for its first weekly fall in five weeks.
  • The Fed is now in its blackout period, so there will be no more Fed speeches before the decision.

Next week’s calendar: Oct 26–30

Times below assume Europe is on winter time (from Oct 25) and the US is still on summer time (until Nov 1). Calendars can change, so check the live news and calendar before trading.

Day Event GMT IST
Tue 27 US durable goods orders 12:30 6:00 pm
Tue 27 US consumer confidence 14:00 7:30 pm
Tue 27 FOMC meeting begins — —
Wed 28 FOMC statement 18:00 11:30 pm
Wed 28 Fed press conference 18:30 12:00 am (Thu)
Thu 29 US Q3 GDP (advance) and September PCE inflation 12:30 6:00 pm
Thu 29 ECB rate decision (per published calendars) 13:15 6:45 pm

Thursday may matter as much as Wednesday. GDP and PCE arrive the morning after the Fed. If PCE confirms the hot CPI and PPI, a “hawkish hold” on Wednesday could turn into hike talk again on Thursday.

What the Fed decision means for gold

Gold pays no interest, so it reacts to what the Fed does to real yields and the dollar. There are three realistic outcomes:

  1. Hold, with hawkish language (the market’s base case): rates unchanged, but the statement or press conference keeps a December hike on the table. Gold often dips on the headline, then trades the press conference.
  2. Surprise hike: with October odds near 16%, a hike would be a shock. Expect a fast drop and wide spreads.
  3. Hold, with softer language: if the Fed sounds less worried about inflation, real yields can fall and gold can break higher.

Key XAUUSD levels

Resistance - $4,200: the top of this week’s range and the level bulls need to close above. - $4,242–4,248: the 100-day moving average.

Support - $4,100: the bottom of the range. - $4,073: the October 14 low, set after the CPI release. - $4,000: the big psychological level. Below that, the July lows near $3,996 and $3,959.

Two scenarios traders are watching

Scenario 1: Range breaks higher. A daily close above $4,200 after the Fed would suggest the market has absorbed the hot inflation data. The 100-day moving average near $4,242–4,248 is the next test.

Scenario 2: Range breaks lower. A move below $4,100, especially after hot PCE on Thursday, puts the $4,073 low and then $4,000 back in play.

Until one side breaks, many traders treat $4,100–4,200 as a range: fade the edges with tight risk, or wait for a confirmed break. Our breakout and retest guide explains how to tell a real break from a fake one.

Timing heads-up: the one-week clock gap

Europe moved its clocks back on Sunday, October 25. The US doesn’t change until Sunday, November 1. For this one week:

  • London and New York are four hours apart instead of five.
  • The London open is 8:00 GMT (1:30 pm IST).
  • US data at 8:30 am ET lands at 12:30 GMT (6:00 pm IST).

Size down for Fed week

Back-to-back high-impact events mean bigger, faster moves and wider spreads. If your usual stop is $8 but you need $15 of room this week, cut your lot size so the dollar risk stays the same. The position size calculator does the math in seconds.

Frequently asked questions

When is the October 2026 Fed decision?

The FOMC meets on October 27–28, 2026. The statement is due on Wednesday, October 28 at 2:00 pm ET (18:00 GMT, 11:30 pm IST), followed by the press conference at 2:30 pm ET.

What are the key gold levels for Oct 26–30?

Resistance at $4,200, then the 100-day moving average near $4,242–4,248. Support at $4,100, the October 14 low near $4,073, and the $4,000 psychological level below that.

Why do session times change this week?

Europe ended summer time on Sunday, October 25, but the US doesn’t change until Sunday, November 1. For one week, London and New York are only four hours apart instead of five. US data and the Fed decision land one hour earlier than usual for traders in the UK and Europe, while times in India (IST) stay the same as they were in the summer.
