Gold Price Forecast 2027: What the Big Banks Expect for XAUUSD

Gold hit a record near $5,589 in January 2026, then lost about a quarter of its value as the Fed turned hawkish. Yet most big banks still expect new highs in 2027. Here's what they forecast, why, and what would have to happen for them to be right.

Where gold stands now

  • Spot gold is trading around $4,150–4,200 in mid-October 2026, inside a $4,100–4,200 range.
  • The record is about $5,589, set intraday on January 28, 2026, according to widely reported spot data.
  • The Fed is hiking, not cutting. It raised rates by 0.25% to 3.75–4.00% on September 16, its first hike since 2023, and markets price a high chance of another hike in December.
  • The 10-year Treasury yield is above 5.2%, which makes non-yielding gold less attractive to hold.

That’s the backdrop every 2027 forecast has to deal with.

Bank forecasts at a glance

Wells Fargo $4,900–5,100 $5,400–5,600 Cut twice in 2026

These figures come from public reporting of bank research, and different outlets sometimes quote different numbers for the same bank. Banks revise targets often, sometimes several times a quarter. Use the table to see the direction of expert opinion, not as a price promise.

The pattern is clear: banks cut their 2026 targets as the Fed turned hawkish, but most kept 2027 targets well above today’s price.

The four drivers behind every forecast

1. The Fed and real yields

Gold pays no interest. When real yields (interest rates after inflation) rise, holding gold costs more in lost income. J.P. Morgan has estimated that gold has been falling roughly $20 an ounce for every 0.01% rise in 10-year real yields since late February. The single biggest question for 2027 is when the Fed stops hiking. Read what moves gold prices for the full mechanism.

2. Central bank buying

Central banks have been the steadiest buyers. According to the World Gold Council, they bought 289 tonnes in Q2 2026, up about 62% from a year earlier, led by Poland (51 tonnes) and China (33 tonnes). Turkey and Russia were net sellers. Most bullish forecasts assume this buying continues at a similar pace.

3. ETF and investor flows

Western investors sold gold ETFs in the first half of 2026, with outflows of around 45 tonnes in Q2. Flows reportedly turned positive again in mid-August, led by Europe. A sustained return of ETF buying would be one of the clearest signs that a new rally is starting.

4. Geopolitics, oil and politics

Conflict in the Middle East and shipping risks around the Strait of Hormuz have pushed oil and inflation higher. That has a double effect: fear supports gold, but higher inflation keeps rates high, which hurts it. So far in 2026, rates have won. The US midterm elections on November 3 add another layer of policy uncertainty.

Bull, base and bear cases for 2027

Case What happens Where gold could trade
Bull Fed ends hikes early in 2027 and starts cutting; real yields fall; ETF buying returns; central banks keep buying A retest of the $5,000–5,600 zone and the January record
Base One or two more hikes, then a long pause; central banks keep buying; ETFs flat A slow grind higher, in line with most bank targets
Bear Inflation stays hot and the Fed keeps hiking into 2027; dollar strong; central bank buying slows A break of $4,000, with the $3,950–4,000 area as the key battleground

What traders can watch every week

You don’t need to guess a 2027 price to trade gold well. Watch the things that will move the forecasts:

  • US inflation (CPI, PCE) and jobs data: hot numbers push hike odds up and gold down. See how to trade gold on NFP day.
  • Fed meetings and FedWatch odds: the next decision is October 28. Our Fed-day routine explains how to handle it.
  • Monthly central bank data from the World Gold Council.
  • The $4,000 level: a weekly close below it would put the bear case on the table; a break above the 100-day moving average (around $4,240–4,250) would support the base and bull cases.

We cover these every weekend in the Gold Week Ahead and on the live news and calendar page.

Frequently asked questions

What is the gold price forecast for 2027?

Most published bank forecasts for the end of 2027 sit between about $5,000 and $5,600 an ounce. Goldman Sachs targets $5,400 and UBS’s path reaches $5,400 by September 2027. Forecasts change often, so treat them as scenarios rather than promises.

Why do banks still expect gold to rise after the 2026 drop?

Their main reasons are steady central bank buying, expectations that the Fed’s hiking cycle will end, and gold’s role as a hedge against debt, inflation and geopolitical risk. Goldman’s view is that rate hikes delay the gold rally rather than end it.

What could stop gold reaching $5,000 in 2027?

Higher-for-longer US rates, rising real yields, a strong dollar, continued ETF outflows or a sharp slowdown in central bank purchases. If the Fed keeps hiking into 2027, most forecasts would likely be cut again.
