Gold Week Ahead: After the Hot CPI, Can XAUUSD Hold $4,000? (Oct 19–23, 2026)

September's inflation report came in hot, gold dropped below $4,100 and the market now wonders whether the Fed hikes again on October 28. Here's what moved gold this week, the levels traders are watching, and every event on next week's calendar, in your time zone.

This week in one minute

  • US CPI ran hot. September headline inflation rose 0.6% on the month and 3.7% on the year, up from 3.4%. Core inflation rose 0.3% to 2.6% a year, above forecasts. Energy prices jumped 5.2% in the month. (BLS)
  • Gold dropped about 2%. XAUUSD traded as high as about $4,170 on the day, then fell through $4,100 to a five-day low of $4,073.
  • Fed hike odds jumped. Markets moved from roughly 22% to about 42% odds of a rate hike at the October 28 meeting, and the 10-year Treasury yield sits above 5.2%. (FXStreet)

Gold had already slipped for three sessions before the report, with spot near $4,143 on Wednesday morning. (Mitrade) CPI simply added fuel.

Why the CPI hit gold so hard

Gold pays no interest. When inflation runs hot, the market expects the Fed to keep rates higher for longer, or even raise them. That pushes real yields and the US dollar up, and both make gold less attractive to hold.

There is a twist this time. A big share of the inflation came from energy, driven by shipping risks around the Strait of Hormuz. Geopolitical stress usually supports gold as a safe haven, but the same stress is pushing oil and inflation higher, which keeps rates elevated. For now, rates are winning that tug of war.

Pro tip: when gold reacts to a data release, watch the US 2-year yield and the dollar index at the same time. If gold falls while yields rise, the move is about rates, and the next rate-sensitive event (here, the Fed) becomes the one to plan around.

Still to come this week

Day Event Time (ET) Time (IST)
Thu, Oct 15 US retail sales (Sep) and PPI (Sep) 8:30 am 6:00 pm

Fed Chair Kevin Warsh also speaks with IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva in Bangkok, so listen for any comment on inflation. Another firm inflation number in the PPI would back up the CPI message. Soft retail sales could ease some of the hike pressure.

Next week is light on US data, which usually means gold trades the levels and the Fed expectations rather than headlines. China’s data on Monday matters for demand sentiment, and Friday’s US PMIs are the main US release.

Key XAUUSD levels

Level Why it matters
$4,248 100-day moving average: a close above flips the medium-term tone
$4,200 Round number and the “bullish trigger” many analysts watch
$4,150 Broken support from this week; now the first resistance
$4,100 Old range floor, lost after CPI
$4,050 Nearest support below the CPI low
$4,000 The big psychological level
$3,996 / $3,959 July lows; below them the yearly low near $3,941 comes into view

Levels from FXStreet and Mitrade analysis. Momentum (RSI) was falling toward oversold territory after the drop.

Two scenarios traders are watching

Scenario 1: $4,000 holds. Oversold momentum, a quiet US calendar and safe-haven demand from the Middle East could bring buyers back at the round number. A reclaim of $4,100–4,150 would show the CPI drop being absorbed, with $4,200 the next test.

Scenario 2: $4,000 breaks. If yields keep climbing and hike odds rise further, a clean break of $4,000 would put the July lows in play. Watch how price behaves at $3,996 and $3,959: a sweep and fast reclaim is a very different signal from steady acceptance below.

Either way, the real event is Wednesday, October 28: the FOMC decision at 2:00 pm ET (11:30 pm IST) and the press conference at 2:30 pm ET. (Federal Reserve) Expect gold to stay sensitive to any Fed speaker until then.

Frequently asked questions

Why did gold fall after the September CPI report?

Inflation rose to 3.7% year on year and core inflation beat expectations. That raised the odds of another Fed rate hike, which lifted Treasury yields and the dollar. Higher yields raise the cost of holding gold, which pays no interest, so gold sold off.

When is the next Fed meeting?

The FOMC meets on October 27–28, 2026. The decision is due on Wednesday, October 28 at 2:00 pm ET (11:30 pm IST), with the press conference at 2:30 pm ET.

What are the key gold levels for next week?

On the downside, traders are watching $4,050, the $4,000 round number and the July lows around $3,996 and $3,959. On the upside, $4,150 and $4,200 are the first hurdles, with the 100-day moving average near $4,248 above them.
