How ECB and Bank of Japan Decisions Move Gold: The Euro, the Yen and XAUUSD

Most gold traders watch the Fed and little else. But the euro makes up more than half of the dollar index and the yen is the second-biggest piece, so decisions in Frankfurt and Tokyo can move XAUUSD too. Next week all three central banks meet within three days of each other.

The short answer

The European Central Bank (ECB) and the Bank of Japan (BoJ) move gold mainly through currencies. Gold is priced in US dollars, and the US dollar index (DXY) is dominated by the euro (57.6%) and the yen (13.6%). When the ECB or BoJ surprises the market, the euro or yen moves, the dollar index moves the other way, and XAUUSD usually reacts.

These are second-tier events next to a Fed decision. But in the last week of October 2026 the Fed (October 28), the ECB (October 29) and the BoJ (October 30) all meet within three days, so a surprise from any of them can change the tone for gold.

Why the euro and yen matter to XAUUSD

The dollar index measures the dollar against six currencies. Its weights have been fixed since the euro launched in 1999:

Currency Weight in DXY
Euro (EUR) 57.6%
Japanese yen (JPY) 13.6%
British pound (GBP) 11.9%
Canadian dollar (CAD) 9.1%
Swedish krona (SEK) 4.2%
Swiss franc (CHF) 3.6%

So if the euro jumps 1% against the dollar, the dollar index falls by roughly half a percent from that move alone. A weaker dollar makes gold cheaper for buyers using other currencies, which is one reason XAUUSD often rises when the DXY falls. Our intermarket analysis guide covers the full set of links.

There’s a second channel too: rate gaps. If the ECB or BoJ raises rates while the Fed holds, the extra return on US assets shrinks. That can weaken the dollar over time, which tends to help gold.

Where the ECB stands in October 2026

The ECB has raised rates twice this year as an energy shock tied to the Middle East war lifted inflation:

Date (2026) Decision Deposit rate after
April 30 Hold 2.00%
June 11 +0.25% 2.25%
July 23 Hold 2.25%
September 10 +0.25% 2.50%

Euro-area inflation rose to 3.7% in September, above expectations, according to Danske Bank. Even so, Danske expects the ECB to hold on October 29, in line with consensus and market pricing, with a possible 25 basis point hike in December. It noted that markets price about 75 basis points of further ECB tightening in total.

Timing: the decision comes at 14:15 CET (13:15 UTC) on Thursday, October 29, with President Christine Lagarde’s press conference at 14:45 CET. Lagarde has said decisions are taken meeting by meeting, so traders will listen for any hint about December.

Where the Bank of Japan stands

The BoJ raised its key rate to 1.25% in September 2026, its highest in 31 years, according to Reuters reporting carried by Investing.com. Sources told Reuters the bank is likely to hold at the meeting ending October 30, but may raise its inflation forecast because of higher oil prices, leaving scope for a hike as soon as December.

A Reuters poll published on October 20 found 54 of 78 economists expect a hike in December, and 39 of 65 expect the rate to reach 1.75% by the end of June 2027.

The BoJ decision time isn’t fixed. It usually lands in the Asian morning, when gold liquidity is thinner, so moves can be sharper than you’d expect.

How surprises usually flow through to gold

Surprise Likely currency move Dollar index Typical pressure on XAUUSD
ECB hikes when a hold was expected Euro up Down Supportive
ECB holds and sounds dovish Euro down Up Negative
BoJ hikes or signals one soon Yen up Down Supportive
BoJ sounds cautious, yen slides Yen down Up Negative
ECB/BoJ in line with expectations Small Small Usually little effect

These are tendencies, not rules. If a hawkish ECB lifts bond yields everywhere, the higher-yield effect can offset the weaker-dollar effect. That’s why it helps to watch both the dollar and US real yields on our real yields and dollar tool.

A worked example (hypothetical)

Imagine EUR/USD jumps 0.8% after an unexpected ECB hike. With a 57.6% weight, that move alone would pull the dollar index down by roughly 0.46% (0.8 × 0.576), all else equal. If gold were trading at $4,080 and responded fully in line with a weaker dollar, that could be worth roughly $15–20. In practice the reaction is rarely that clean: other currencies, yields and positioning all play a part. The point is that a big euro move can nudge gold, but a small one usually won’t.

A plan for the October 28–30 run of meetings

Three central bank events in three days means more noise than usual. A simple routine:

  1. Mark the times. Fed: October 28, 18:00 UTC. ECB: October 29, 13:15 UTC. BoJ: October 30, usually Asian morning. US PCE inflation and Q3 GDP also land on October 29 at 12:30 UTC, just before the ECB. The economic calendar on our news page lists them in your time zone.
  2. Know what’s priced. A hold that everyone expects rarely moves much. The surprise is in the statement, the press conference and any change in guidance.
  3. Reduce size around releases. Spreads widen and slippage rises. Our news trading playbook and Fed day routine explain how to approach event risk.
  4. Watch EUR/USD and USD/JPY alongside XAUUSD. If gold moves but the euro or yen doesn’t, the driver is probably something else.

Back-to-back central bank decisions can produce whipsaws: a spike one way after the Fed, a reversal after PCE and the ECB, and another jolt on the BoJ in thin Asian liquidity. Never trade without a stop, and consider sitting out the first minutes after each release.

Key takeaways

  • The ECB and BoJ affect gold mainly through the euro and yen, which together make up over 70% of the dollar index.
  • Both are expected to hold next week; a surprise matters far more than an expected decision.
  • The Fed remains the main event. ECB and BoJ decisions can confirm or soften the dollar move that follows it. Read what moves gold prices for the full list of drivers.

Frequently asked questions

Does the ECB affect the gold price?

Yes, mostly through the euro. The euro carries a 57.6% weight in the US dollar index. A hawkish ECB surprise tends to lift the euro and weaken the dollar, which usually supports XAUUSD. A dovish surprise tends to do the opposite.

Does the Bank of Japan affect gold?

Yes, through the yen and global bond yields. The yen has a 13.6% weight in the dollar index, and BoJ policy shifts can move yields worldwide. A surprise BoJ hike that lifts the yen tends to weaken the dollar index, which is usually supportive for gold priced in dollars.

When are the ECB and BoJ decisions in October 2026?

The ECB announces on Thursday, October 29, 2026 at 14:15 CET (13:15 UTC), with the press conference at 14:45 CET. The Bank of Japan’s two-day meeting ends on Friday, October 30; its decision time is not fixed but usually lands in the Asian morning.

What are the ECB and BoJ expected to do?

Both are widely expected to hold. Danske Bank expects the ECB to keep the deposit rate at 2.50%, in line with consensus, while Reuters sources expect the BoJ to keep its rate at 1.25% and leave the door open to a December hike. Check the latest pricing before the meetings.

Which matters more for gold, the Fed or the ECB?

The Fed, by a wide margin, because gold is priced in dollars and US real yields are its main opportunity cost. ECB and BoJ decisions are second-tier drivers that matter most when they surprise or when they change the gap between US and foreign rates.
