ECB in gold trading
The ECB is the central bank for the euro area; its rate decisions move the euro and the dollar index, which in turn can push XAUUSD up or down.
Also called European Central Bank, ECB decision, Eurozone rates
The ECB (European Central Bank) sets monetary policy for the countries that use the euro. Its Governing Council holds eight monetary policy meetings a year, announcing decisions at 14:15 Frankfurt time, followed by a press conference at 14:45.
How it applies to gold trading
The ECB affects gold mainly through the dollar. The euro is the largest component of the dollar index, so a hawkish ECB surprise that lifts EURUSD weakens the DXY, which tends to support XAUUSD. A dovish surprise does the opposite. The effect is usually smaller than a Fed decision, but on ECB days the press conference falls in the European afternoon, overlapping US hours.
For euro-based traders, the ECB also changes the gold price in euros. A gold cross such as XAUEUR shows whether an XAUUSD move on ECB day was dollar-driven.
Worked example
Example (hypothetical numbers): the ECB holds rates as expected but the president signals no further cuts. EURUSD rises from 1.0750 to 1.0830, the dollar index drops 0.5% and XAUUSD rises from 4,000 to 4,016. XAUEUR, by contrast, slips slightly as the euro strengthens.
A common mistake
Ignoring non-US central banks entirely. Their decisions move the dollar, and the dollar moves gold.

Frequently asked questions
How does the ECB affect gold?
Mostly through the dollar. A hawkish ECB lifts the euro, weakens the dollar index and tends to support XAUUSD; a dovish ECB tends to do the opposite.
What time is the ECB decision?
At 14:15 Frankfurt time, with the press conference at 14:45. Convert to your time zone, remembering daylight saving shifts.
Does an ECB rate cut make gold go up?
Not directly. A cut tends to weaken the euro and strengthen the dollar, which can weigh on XAUUSD, unless the cut was expected and the guidance is less dovish than feared.
