Gold News, 21 October 2026: 7 stories moving XAUUSD

Gold headed for a fourth straight loss on Wednesday, dipping to its lowest since October 15 as Brent climbed back above $110 and a Reuters poll found all 100 economists expect the Fed to hike in December. Hotter UK inflation added to the global rate-hike mood, and Indian prices fell sharply as markets caught up after Dussehra.

Gold slips to a one-week low near $4,114 as every economist polled sees a December hike

Technicals

Gold dips to its lowest since October 15, heading for a fourth daily loss

Spot gold traded near $4,114 in Wednesday’s European morning, down about 0.2%, after Reuters had it at $4,118.18 at 03:19 GMT; by 10:45 GMT it had steadied at $4,127.53. December gold futures stood around $4,136. FX Leaders flagged $4,076 as the October floor that buyers defended on October 7 and October 14.

Why it matters for gold:

Gold is pressing the bottom of its $4,100–4,200 October range for the third time this month. Repeated tests of the same floor can weaken it, so traders watch whether a daily close holds above $4,076–4,100 or breaks it. Our support and resistance guide explains how to judge a real break from a quick dip.

Geopolitics

Brent swings from $111.99 to $108.79 on Iran-talks reports, then climbs back above $110

Brent touched $111.99 on Tuesday, its highest since May, then settled at $108.79 after reports that mediators were exploring a way to revive US-Iran talks. Later reports disputed that a deal was close, and Brent was back above $110 on Wednesday. Shipments through the Strait of Hormuz remain well below pre-war levels, Kitco said.

Why it matters for gold:

What’s new since Monday is that diplomacy headlines can now knock oil down quickly, and gold has been reacting through the inflation channel. A credible path to talks would ease oil, inflation fears and pressure on gold; failed talks would do the opposite. Our gold and oil guide explains the link.

Fed

Reuters poll: all 100 economists now expect a Fed hike in December

In a Reuters poll taken October 16–20, 94 of 100 economists expected the Fed to hold its 3.75–4.00% range at the October 27–28 meeting, and all 100 expected a hike in December, up from fewer than half a month ago. Nearly 60% see rates peaking at 4.00–4.25%, while 38 of 92 now expect at least two more increases.

Why it matters for gold:

Economists now agree with futures markets, so a December hike is close to fully priced. That leaves gold sensitive to anything that changes the path after December, such as a Fed chair signalling more hikes, or softer PCE and CPI data. Our Fed day routine covers how gold usually trades around a decision.

Inflation

UK inflation jumps to 3.5% in September, above forecasts

UK consumer prices rose 3.5% in the year to September, up from 3.1% in August and above the 3.4% economists expected, the ONS said. Core inflation rose to 2.8% from 2.6%, with motor fuels the biggest upward push. FXStreet said the data could justify a Bank of England hike in November.

Why it matters for gold:

Another big economy is facing energy-driven inflation, which adds to the global trend of higher rates that weighs on non-yielding gold. On Tuesday, BoE policymaker Megan Greene also said policy is not restrictive enough. Our CPI day guide shows how inflation data moves gold.

Yields

US housing data slumps and the 10-year yield eases to 5.116%, but gold still falls

September pending home sales fell 7.3% on the month, to the lowest since the index began in 2001, and housing starts fell 5.2% to a 1.221 million annual rate, below the roughly 1.305 million expected. The 10-year Treasury yield slipped about 1.9 basis points to 5.116% and the dollar softened, yet spot gold still ended Tuesday about 0.4% lower.

Why it matters for gold:

Lower yields and a weaker dollar normally help gold, so a fall on that kind of day shows how strongly inflation and December hike fears are weighing on it. If weak data keeps pulling yields down, gold has room to recover; if not, the headwind stays. Our real yields and dollar tool tracks both.

Silver

Silver gains while gold falls, pulling the gold-silver ratio down to about 71

Silver futures rose $0.91, or 1.59%, to settle at $58.14 on Tuesday, a second day of gains, while gold fell for a third session. The gold-silver ratio dropped nearly 2% to 71.11, having hit an annual high near 74 the previous week, according to a Kitco commentary.

Why it matters for gold:

Silver gaining while gold falls suggests buyers are favouring the more industrial metal over the pure safe haven. A falling ratio is often read as a sign of risk appetite returning to metals. Our gold-silver ratio guide explains how to read it.

Physical demand

Indian gold benchmark drops ₹2,346 as markets reopen after Dussehra

The IBJA 999-purity rate was ₹1,44,060 per 10 grams at Wednesday’s morning fixing, down ₹2,346 (1.60%) from October 19, as there was no fixing on October 20. MCX December gold futures traded 0.40% lower at ₹1,45,939 around 9:40 am. Dhanteras falls on November 6 this year, according to Upstox.

Why it matters for gold:

Indian prices are catching up with two days of global losses in one go, after the Dussehra break. Lower local prices about two weeks before Dhanteras can bring festival buyers back, which supports physical demand. Our per-gram and tola converter guide shows how the XAUUSD price turns into the Indian rate.
