Sessions: gold trading guides

Gold trades almost 24 hours a day, but not all hours are equal. These guides show when liquidity and volatility arrive in your time zone.

About this topic

Session guides answer one of the most searched questions about gold: when should I trade it? XAUUSD is quoted from the Sunday evening open in New York to the Friday close, but volume and range are concentrated in the London morning, the London and New York overlap, and the minutes around US data at 8:30 a.m. Eastern. The guides here lay out the full gold trading day in GMT and convert it to New York, Dubai, Singapore, Sydney and Indian Standard Time, compare the London and New York sessions candle by candle, and explain what happens at the weekend, including why Monday often opens with a gap.

This topic is for traders fitting gold around a job or a time zone, and for anyone who keeps getting chopped up in the Asian range or caught in the New York open. The session times quoted come from CME Group's published trading hours and the LBMA auction schedule, and the free gold market hours tool shows live session status in your own time zone, with daylight-saving changes handled for you. The Gold Trading Academy has full strategy lessons built on these sessions, such as the Asian range breakout at the London open and session-specific guides to London and New York; links are below. As with every article on this site, knowing when the market is active is context for your own decision, not a signal to trade.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best time of day to trade gold?

Most volume and range arrive during the London session (about 08:00 to 16:30 GMT) and especially the London and New York overlap (about 13:00 to 16:30 GMT). US data at 13:30 GMT (8:30 a.m. Eastern) often produces the largest single moves. Our worldwide hours guide converts these to your time zone.

Does gold trade on weekends?

Spot gold and gold CFDs do not trade from the Friday close in New York until the Sunday evening open. A few brokers quote synthetic weekend prices. Because news continues over the weekend, gold often opens Sunday evening with a gap.

What time should Indian traders trade gold?

In IST the London open falls around 12:30 or 13:30 pm depending on daylight saving, and the New York open and US data releases around 6:00 to 7:00 pm. Our India sessions guide and the market hours tool show the exact times for today.
