NFP Day Gold Playbook: A Friday Plan for the US Jobs Report on XAUUSD

The US jobs report lands at 8:30 am New York time on a Friday, which makes NFP day two risks in one: a fast release-minute move and a weekend straight after it. This playbook gives you the times in your zone, what gold typically does before, at and after the release, a written plan for each stage and the risk rules that keep one Friday from undoing a good week.

The short answer

On NFP day, gold often trades in a tightening range into 8:30 am New York time, moves sharply in the first minutes after the release, frequently retraces part of that move once traders read beyond the headline, and then runs into the Friday close and the weekend gap. The surprise against the forecast sets the first direction; wages, the unemployment rate and revisions decide whether it holds.

This playbook is the event-day version of how to trade gold on NFP day. It assumes you know what NFP is and focuses on the plan.

What the release is

The Employment Situation report from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics is usually published on the first Friday of the month. Traders call it NFP, after its headline figure, the change in non-farm payrolls. For gold, three numbers matter most:

Number Why gold cares
Payrolls change vs forecast A strong labour market gives the Fed less reason to cut rates
Unemployment rate A rising rate points to a cooling economy
Average hourly earnings Wage growth feeds inflation, which shapes rate expectations

Revisions to the two previous months can matter as much as the new number. Our gold and NFP tracker shows how gold moved on past jobs reports, updated automatically from public data.

How XAUUSD typically behaves, stage by stage

These mechanics recur often enough to plan around. None of them is guaranteed.

Before: London, then the wait

The London session on NFP Friday often trades normally in the morning and then slows down as 8:30 am New York approaches. Many traders flatten positions before the number, so liquidity thins and ranges narrow. Moves in the last hour before the release can be erratic and are often given back.

At 8:30 am: the release minute

  • Spreads widen, sometimes for a minute or more.
  • The first candle can be very large, and prices can jump between levels without trading at the ones in between.
  • Stops are filled at the next available price, which can be far from their level.
  • Algorithms react to the headline first, before the details are read.

The first 15 to 30 minutes: reading the details

Once traders read wages, the unemployment rate and revisions, the move is re-priced. A headline beat with soft wages, for example, can see an initial drop in gold give way to a rebound. This first-move fade is common enough to plan for and unreliable enough that it should never be assumed.

Later: the US open and the Friday close

The US cash equity open at 9:30 am New York adds a second burst of activity. After that, the market heads towards the Friday close at 5:00 pm New York, and anyone still holding a position carries it into the weekend gap.

The NFP day plan

Pre-event checklist (Thursday evening and Friday morning)

  • [ ] Confirm the release date on the BLS schedule and convert 8:30 am New York to your zone.
  • [ ] Note the forecasts for payrolls, unemployment and average hourly earnings, and last month’s figures.
  • [ ] Note any other big event the same week (a Fed meeting, CPI) that has already shifted expectations.
  • [ ] Mark the key levels: the Asian and London ranges, the prior day’s high and low, the weekly pivot and the statistical range from the weekly gold forecast, and round numbers.
  • [ ] Check today’s normal range on the gold volatility tracker.
  • [ ] Decide your plan (below) and write it down before London.
  • [ ] Decide whether anything will be held into the weekend. Default: no.

Choose one plan in advance

Plan What you do Best for
A. Stand aside No new trades from 30 minutes before the release until 30 minutes after it. Use the day to review the reaction. Beginners and anyone without a tested event plan
B. Trade the retest Wait at least 15 minutes. If price breaks a pre-marked level, comes back to it and holds, take a reduced-size trade with the stop beyond the post-release extreme. Intraday traders with a written retest rule
C. Flat by the close Any trade, on any plan, is closed before the Friday close. Everyone without a swing plan built for weekend risk

During (8:00 am to 9:30 am New York)

  1. 8:00 am: no new entries. Note the range you are leaving.
  2. 8:30 am: read the headline against the forecast, then wages, unemployment and revisions. Note the first move’s size compared with the day’s normal range.
  3. 8:45 am onward: if on Plan B, look for your retest. One attempt only.
  4. 9:30 am: watch whether the US open extends or reverses the move.

After (Friday afternoon and the weekend)

  • Close anything you do not intend to hold through the weekend.
  • Write the review: forecast, actual, revisions, first move, the move after the details, the close.
  • Ask the review question that matters: did you follow the plan you wrote before London?

Worked example (hypothetical)

The numbers below are invented to show the process. They are not a forecast or a record of a real release.

  • Account: $10,000. Risk per trade: 0.5%, so $50.
  • Normal day: the volatility tracker shows gold’s recent average daily range is about $40 (hypothetical).
  • Plan written before London: Plan B. Levels marked: the London high and low, and the weekly pivot between them.
  • 8:30 am: payrolls come in well above the forecast. Gold drops $18 in two minutes and breaks below the London low. Spreads are wide; you do nothing.
  • 8:50 am: wages come in softer than expected and revisions are negative. Gold rebounds to the London low from below and stalls there for three five-minute candles.
  • The trade: a short on the retest of the London low as resistance, with the stop above the post-release high, $9 away. Size: $50 ÷ ($9 × 100) = 0.05 lots (about 0.055, rounded down).
  • Outcome: whatever happens, the loss is capped near $50 plus slippage, and the review asks whether the retest met the written rule.

Compare that size with a normal-day trade with a $4 stop: about 0.12 lots for the same $50 risk. The event did not change the risk, it changed the size. That is the whole point.

Common NFP-day mistakes

  • Trading the first candle because it looks decisive. It is the least reliable price of the day.
  • Reading only the headline. Wages and revisions regularly change the story within minutes.
  • Moving the stop after the release because “it will come back”.
  • Forgetting the weekend. A good Friday trade held carelessly can become a bad Monday gap.

Risk rules for NFP day

  • Size for the stop you actually need. A post-release stop is wider; the position must be smaller. Use the position size calculator.
  • Expect slippage on any order resting near price at 8:30 am.
  • No entries in the release minute. You would be trading the widest spreads of the day.
  • One trade, one attempt. Revenge trading on a Friday has a whole weekend to feel bad about.
  • Weekend risk is real. If you hold past the close, accept that the Monday open can gap through your stop.

The jobs report regularly produces some of the fastest moves of the month in gold. Spreads widen, stops can fill far from their level, and the weekend follows straight after. Standing aside is a valid plan.

Work through it live in the community

In the XAUUSD Global community, NFP Friday is a team event. Pods post their plan at the New York stand-up (it opens at 12:30 UTC), watch the release together, and post their trades or their sit-out reasons as screenshots with thesis, invalidation and outcome. Sitting out with a reason earns Gold Season points, because discipline is the skill. The Friday review then covers the whole week, NFP included.

Frequently asked questions

What time is the NFP report released?

The US Employment Situation report, which includes non-farm payrolls, is released at 8:30 am New York time. That is 12:30 UTC while the US is on daylight saving time and 13:30 UTC in winter; 18:00 IST in US summer and 19:00 IST in US winter.

When is the next NFP release?

On our calendar, the next jobs reports are on Friday 6 November 2026 and Friday 4 December 2026, both at 13:30 UTC (19:00 IST). Dates can change, so confirm on the Bureau of Labor Statistics release schedule the day before.

How does gold react to NFP?

Gold reacts to the surprise against the forecast and to what it implies for Fed rates. Stronger-than-expected jobs and wage growth tend to lift yields and the dollar and weigh on gold; weaker data tends to do the opposite. The first move can reverse once traders read the unemployment rate, wages and revisions.

Which parts of the jobs report matter most for gold?

The headline payrolls change against the forecast, the unemployment rate and average hourly earnings, plus revisions to the previous months. A strong headline with weak wages or large downward revisions can produce a mixed or reversing reaction.

Should I hold a gold trade over the weekend after NFP?

Only at a size where a Monday gap through your stop is an acceptable loss. Gold closes on Friday at 5:00 pm New York time and reopens on Sunday evening, and news over the weekend can open it far from Friday’s close.

Is this an NFP trading signal?

No. It is an educational routine for planning and reviewing your own trades on jobs-report day. It does not tell you which direction to trade.
