The short answer
Most MT5 (and MT4) errors on gold mean one of six things:
- Invalid volume: your lot size isn’t allowed. Use the symbol’s minimum and step, usually 0.01.
- Not enough money: not enough free margin. Reduce the lot size.
- Market closed: gold isn’t trading right now on your server, or you picked the wrong symbol.
- Trade disabled: the symbol or your login can’t trade. Check the suffix, trade mode and password type.
- Invalid stops: stop-loss or take-profit too close or on the wrong side.
- Off quotes / requote: price moved before your order filled. Wait or retry.
The table below gives the cause and fix for each, and the sections after it explain the ones that confuse people most.
The six errors at a glance
| Message (MT5 / MT4) | What it means | Most common gold cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Invalid volume / invalid trade volume | Lot size not allowed | 0.001 or 0.015 lot on a 0.01-step symbol | Use min / step from Specification |
| Not enough money | Free margin too low | Lot too large for the account | Smaller lot; check with the margin calculator |
| Market closed | No trading session now | Weekend, daily break, holiday | Check the market hours tool |
| Trade disabled / trade is disabled | Trading off for this symbol or login | Wrong suffix, close-only mode, investor password | Use the right symbol; log in with the master password |
| Invalid stops | SL/TP too close or wrong side | Inside stops level or spread | Move levels further away |
| Requote / off quotes | Price changed or unavailable | News, fast markets, thin liquidity | Retry, adjust deviation, avoid news seconds |
Invalid volume
Right-click the gold symbol in Market Watch → Specification and look at:
- Minimum volume (often 0.01)
- Maximum volume (per order)
- Volume step (often 0.01)
Example: your position size calculator says 0.037 lot. MT5 rejects it. Round down to 0.03, which keeps your risk below plan. The position size calculator shows the exact figure; your platform needs it rounded to the step.
Not enough money
Margin on gold is calculated on the full value of the position:
Margin = lots × contract size × price ÷ leverage
Illustrative example with gold at $4,000 and 100 oz per lot:
| Lot | Position value | Margin at 1:100 | Margin at 1:500 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.01 | $4,000 | $40 | $8 |
| 0.10 | $40,000 | $400 | $80 |
| 1.00 | $400,000 | $4,000 | $800 |
If your free margin is $300, a 0.10 lot at 1:100 fails. Your broker may also apply a higher margin rate on gold than on currencies, or raise it before weekends and holidays, so check your own figures with the gold margin calculator. Using most of your margin is also how accounts get stopped out; see margin call and stop-out on gold.
Market closed
Gold trades from Sunday 6:00 pm to Friday 5:00 pm New York time, with a one-hour break each weekday from 5:00 to 6:00 pm. Holidays shorten or close sessions. Your broker’s own session times are in Specification → Sessions. If the market is open elsewhere but your platform says closed, you may be using a symbol that isn’t tradeable on your account. The full checklist is in why can’t I trade gold right now.
Trade disabled
Check these four things in order:
- Login type: if you logged in with the investor (read-only) password, every trade is disabled. Log in with the master password.
- Symbol suffix: XAUUSD.pro on a standard account may be visible but disabled. Use your account’s version; see gold symbol names.
- Trade mode in Specification: Full access, Long only, Short only, Close only or Disabled. Close only is common for futures-based gold CFDs near expiry.
- Account status: an unverified, expired or restricted account may be read-only. Ask your broker.
Invalid stops
The stop or target is on the wrong side of price, inside the spread or inside the broker’s Stops level (minimum distance, in points). On many brokers 100 points is $1.00 on gold. A sell’s stop is checked against the ask, so it must sit above ask plus the minimum distance. Step-by-step fixes are in how to set stop-loss and take-profit on gold in MT5.
Requote and off quotes
These happen mainly on instant-execution accounts. You request a price; by the time it reaches the server, gold has moved more than your allowed deviation. A requote offers a new price; off quotes means there was none to give. On market-execution accounts you’re filled at the available price instead, with slippage. Around releases such as NFP and CPI, gold can move several dollars in seconds; see gold slippage explained and the economic calendar.
Other messages you might see
- No connection / waiting for update: check the server name and internet; File → Login to Trade Account.
- Invalid price: a pending order price on the wrong side of the market, e.g. a buy limit above the ask.
- Too many requests: an EA is sending orders too fast; check its settings. See our EA and bots checklist.
- AutoTrading disabled: the Algo Trading button is off (EAs only).
Error codes for EA users
If you run an expert advisor, the Journal or Experts tab shows a number rather than a sentence. The common ones on gold:
| Error | MT4 code | MT5 return code |
|---|---|---|
| Requote | 138 | 10004 |
| Invalid stops | 130 | 10016 |
| Invalid volume | 131 | 10014 |
| Trade disabled | 133 | 10017 |
| Market closed | 132 | 10018 |
| Not enough money | 134 | 10019 |
| Off quotes / no prices | 136 | 10021 |
A well-written EA reads the symbol’s minimum lot, step and stops level before it trades, so it should never send an invalid volume or invalid stops order. If yours does, check its settings or ask the developer.
How to prevent errors
- Check gold’s Specification once per account and write down min lot, step, stops level and sessions.
- Size every trade with the calculators before opening the order window.
- Keep free margin high: never use most of it on one position.
- Don’t trade the seconds around major releases or the daily break.
- Always log in with the master password when you intend to trade.

Educational content only, not financial advice. Trading gold with leverage carries a high risk of loss. Error wording varies slightly between MT4, MT5 and brokers.
Frequently asked questions
What does 'invalid volume' mean on gold in MT5?
The lot size you entered is below the minimum, above the maximum, or not a multiple of the volume step for your gold symbol. Most accounts use a 0.01 minimum and 0.01 step, so 0.005 or 0.015 is rejected. Check Specification → Volume and use an allowed size.
Why does MT5 say 'not enough money' when I have money in my account?
Opening the trade needs more free margin than you have. Gold margin is based on the full position value: at $4,000 an ounce, 1 lot (100 oz) is worth $400,000, so even at 1:100 leverage it needs $4,000 of margin. Reduce the lot size or close other positions.
Why does MT5 say 'market closed' for gold?
Gold is outside its trading hours on your server: the weekend, the daily break from 5:00 to 6:00 pm New York time, a holiday, or a broker-specific session. It can also appear if you chose a symbol that belongs to a different account type.
What does 'trade disabled' mean?
Trading is switched off for that symbol on your account. Common reasons are a symbol suffix for another account type, a close-only mode during a contract change, an investor (read-only) password login, or an account restriction. Check Specification → Trade mode and your login type.
What is an 'off quotes' or requote error?
On instant-execution accounts, the price moved before your order could be filled at the requested price. ‘Requote’ offers you a new price; ‘off quotes’ means no price was available. Both are common on news. Try again when the market calms, or widen the allowed deviation.
How do I fix 'invalid stops' on XAUUSD?
Move the stop-loss or take-profit further from the current price. It must be on the correct side (below the bid for a buy’s stop, above the ask for a sell’s stop) and beyond the broker’s minimum distance, shown as Stops level in the symbol’s Specification.
