Fake MT4 and MT5 Apps and Fake Trading Apps: How to Download the Real One Safely

Scammers know that people trust MetaTrader. So some build look-alike apps and websites, or send you a download link in a chat, and the "trades" you see are just numbers on their own server. This page shows where the real MT4 and MT5 come from (checked on MetaQuotes' own site and the official app-store listings), the signs of a fake, and what to do if you have already used one.

The short answer

Download MetaTrader only from MetaQuotes’ official website or the official app-store listing, and log in only to a broker you have checked on a regulator’s register.

  • Official site: metatrader5.com (MT5) and metatrader4.com (MT4).
  • Google Play: developer MetaQuotes Software Corp., app id net.metaquotes.metatrader5 (MT4: net.metaquotes.metatrader4).
  • Apple App Store: MetaTrader 5, developer MetaQuotes Software Corp.

We checked these on 5 November 2026: the download buttons on metatrader5.com lead to exactly these store listings.

A real MetaTrader app on a fake broker’s server is still a scam. The app is only the window; the broker behind the login is what holds your money.

What MetaQuotes itself says

MetaQuotes, the company that makes MT4 and MT5, publishes a fraud notice. It warns about “fraudulent trading platforms illegally misrepresenting themselves as MetaTrader 4 (MT4) or MetaTrader 5 (MT5)” and says its official platforms “can be downloaded from our official websites, official application stores”. It lists its official websites, including metaquotes.net, metatrader.com, metatrader4.com, metatrader5.com and mql5.com, and asks people to report suspicious sites or apps to support@metaquotes.net. (MetaQuotes fraud notice)

Its download page also says: “MetaQuotes is a software development company and does not provide investment or brokerage services.” (metatrader5.com download page) So MetaQuotes never takes your deposit and never manages your account.

The three kinds of fake

1. A fake app that looks like MetaTrader

The app copies the look of MT5: the charts, the Market Watch, the colours. But the prices and “trades” come from the scammer’s own server. Profits appear on screen, so you deposit more. When you try to withdraw, there’s a fee, a “tax”, or silence.

2. A real MetaTrader app, logged in to a fake broker

This one is harder to spot. The app is genuine, downloaded from the real store. But the “broker” gave you a server name and login to a server they control. The genuine app shows whatever that server sends. Our page on how retail trading works explains why the broker behind the login matters.

3. A fake “trading app” with no MetaTrader at all

A custom app or website, often sent in a chat by a “mentor”, a friend from a dating app or a group admin. It shows a balance that grows quickly. MetaQuotes’ notice tells people to be cautious with so-called “pig butchering” scams. The usual pattern is a long, friendly build-up of trust, a small “test” profit, and then requests to deposit more and more.

How to download the real one, step by step

On Android

  1. Open Google Play yourself. Don’t follow a link from a chat.
  2. Search MetaTrader 5.
  3. Tap the result and check the developer name: MetaQuotes Software Corp.
  4. Install. Then open the app and choose your broker’s server by searching for the broker’s exact name.

On iPhone or iPad

  1. Open the App Store yourself.
  2. Search MetaTrader 5.
  3. Check the developer: MetaQuotes Software Corp.
  4. Install, then find your broker’s server inside the app.

On a Windows PC or Mac

  1. Type metatrader5.com in the address bar yourself (don’t click an ad).
  2. Use the download button for your system.
  3. Many licensed brokers also give a branded MT5 installer on their own websites. That is normal. Check the broker’s website address against the regulator’s register first: see how to check a broker’s licence.

Our MT5 setup guide for gold and the demo account guide take you from there.

MetaQuotes’ download page does offer an official Android APK file. But an APK sent to you on WhatsApp, Telegram or by email can be anything. Only install an APK you downloaded yourself from metatrader5.com, and only if you can’t use Google Play.

10 signs a trading app or platform is fake

  1. The download link came from a person, not from a store you opened yourself.
  2. The store listing’s developer isn’t MetaQuotes Software Corp. (for MetaTrader).
  3. You’re told to deposit to a personal bank account, a UPI ID of a person, or a crypto wallet.
  4. The “broker” isn’t on any regulator’s register, or its website address differs from the register’s. See clone firms and fake websites.
  5. The balance grows fast and smoothly, with almost no losing days.
  6. A “mentor” or “account manager” tells you exactly when to buy, and the trades always win.
  7. Withdrawals need a fee, tax or “unlock” deposit first.
  8. Support only answers in a chat app, never by a company email.
  9. The prices on the app don’t match the real gold price at all (small differences between providers are normal; see why prices differ between brokers and TradingView).
  10. You’re under time pressure: “the offer closes tonight”, “VIP slots are limited”.

If you’ve already used a fake app

Please don’t blame yourself. These schemes are built by professionals to look real.

  1. Stop paying. Don’t pay any fee, tax or “release” deposit.
  2. Save everything: screenshots of the app, chat messages, payment receipts, the website address, the server name.
  3. Contact your bank or payment provider straight away and ask whether the payment can be stopped or disputed.
  4. Report it: to your national police or fraud line, to the regulator whose name was used, and to MetaQuotes at support@metaquotes.net if the app pretended to be MetaTrader.
  5. Change passwords you used in the app, especially if you reused them elsewhere.
  6. Watch out for the second scam. People who lost money are often contacted by “recovery agents”. Read fund recovery scams first.

If you are in India, our page on losing money on an offshore trading app lists the official 1930 helpline, cybercrime.gov.in and RBI Sachet, each checked.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I download the real MT5?

From MetaQuotes’ official website, metatrader5.com, or from the official app-store listings: on Google Play the developer is MetaQuotes Software Corp. (app id net.metaquotes.metatrader5), and on Apple’s App Store the developer is MetaQuotes Software Corp. Many licensed brokers also offer MT5 downloads on their own websites.

How can I tell if a MetaTrader app is fake?

Check the developer name in the store, where the link came from, and whether the app asks you to deposit money to a person or a crypto wallet. Fake platforms often come from a link sent in a chat, show profits that you can’t withdraw, and are run by a firm you can’t find on any regulator’s register.

Does MetaQuotes hold my money?

No. MetaQuotes makes the software. Its download page says it is a software development company and does not provide investment or brokerage services. Your money is held by the broker whose server you log in to.

Is an APK file from a chat link safe?

Treat it as unsafe. MetaQuotes does offer an official APK on its own download page, but an APK sent by a stranger, a ‘mentor’ or a group can be anything. Install trading apps only from the official site or the official store listing.

I deposited money through a fake trading app. What now?

Stop paying anything more, keep every record, contact your bank or payment provider straight away, and report it to the police or your national fraud line. Beware of anyone who then offers to recover the money for a fee: that is a well-known second scam.
