The short answer
On MT5 mobile, set the stop-loss and take-profit in the order screen before you tap Sell by Market or Buy by Market; for an open trade, go to the Trade tab, long-press the position (Android) or tap it (iPhone), choose Modify, enter the prices and confirm. On MT5 desktop, enter them in the New Order window (F9), or drag the dotted lines on the chart, or double-click the position in the Toolbox.
If MT5 says “invalid stops”, your level is on the wrong side of the price or too close to it: inside the broker’s minimum distance (the stops level) or inside the spread. Move it further away.
Before you start: work out the price
MT5 asks for a price, not a dollar amount. Decide the stop distance first, then convert it to a price.
| Trade | Entry | Planned stop | Enter as Stop Loss | Planned target | Enter as Take Profit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Buy | $4,000.00 | $10 below | 3990.00 | $20 above | 4020.00 |
| Sell | $4,000.00 | $10 above | 4010.00 | $20 below | 3980.00 |
On most brokers one point of XAUUSD is $0.01, so $10 = 1,000 points. On 0.10 lot (10 oz) the $10 stop risks about $100. A good stop distance comes from volatility, not a round number: the ATR stop-loss calculator gives you one, and the position size calculator gives the lot that matches your risk.
MT5 mobile: set SL and TP on a new trade
- Go to Quotes, tap XAUUSD (or your broker’s gold symbol) → Trade.
- Choose Market Execution (or a pending order type) and set the volume.
- Tap the Stop Loss field and type the price, e.g. 3990.00. Use the − and + buttons for fine changes.
- Tap Take Profit and type the price.
- Tap Sell by Market or Buy by Market.
- Check the Trade tab: the position shows the SL and TP values.
MT5 mobile: modify an open trade
| Step | Android | iPhone |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Open the Trade tab | Open the Trade tab |
| 2 | Long-press the gold position | Tap the position |
| 3 | Choose Modify position | Choose Modify |
| 4 | Enter new Stop Loss / Take Profit | Enter new Stop Loss / Take Profit |
| 5 | Tap Modify | Tap Modify |
On the mobile chart you can also enable showing trade levels and, in recent versions, drag the SL and TP lines. If dragging isn’t available on your version, use Modify.
MT5 desktop: three ways
- New order window: press F9, fill in Stop Loss and Take Profit, then Sell or Buy.
- Drag on the chart: with “Show trade levels” on (Tools → Options → Charts), drag from the entry line up or down to create a stop or target, or drag existing SL/TP lines.
- Toolbox: press Ctrl+T, open the Trade tab, double-click the position (or right-click → Modify or Delete), enter the levels and click Modify.
Stops on pending orders
You can attach a stop-loss and take-profit to a pending order before it triggers, so the trade is protected from the first tick.
- On mobile: Quotes → gold → Trade → change the type to Buy Limit, Sell Limit, Buy Stop or Sell Stop. On desktop: F9 → Type: Pending Order.
- Enter the price at which the order should trigger.
- Enter Stop Loss and Take Profit relative to that trigger price, not to the current price.
- Choose an expiration: good till cancelled, today, or a specific time.
- Tap Place (mobile) or click Place (desktop).
Illustrative example: a buy limit at $3,980 with a $10 stop and a $20 target needs SL 3970.00 and TP 4000.00. Remember that buy pending orders trigger on the ask and sell pending orders on the bid.
Trailing stop on MT5 desktop
Right-click the position in the Toolbox → Trailing Stop → choose a distance (or Custom). The stop then follows price at that distance once the trade moves into profit.
MT5’s trailing stop runs inside your desktop terminal. If you close the platform or your computer sleeps, it stops trailing (the last stop level stays on the server). It is not available on the mobile app. Many traders run desktop MT5 on a VPS for this reason. Our guide to trailing stops on gold covers distances and methods.
Fixing “invalid stops”
| Cause | Example | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Stop on the wrong side | Buy at 4000 with SL 4005 | Buy SL below the bid; sell SL above the ask |
| Inside the stops level | Stops level 300 points ($3), SL $2 away | Move the level beyond the minimum |
| Inside the spread | Sell with SL $0.20 above the bid, spread $0.30 | Add the spread: a sell’s SL is checked against the ask |
| Freeze level near price | Modifying when price is very close to the level | Wait or move the level further away |
| Market closed or fast market | Modify during the daily break | Try again when quotes resume |
To find the minimum: right-click the symbol in Market Watch → Specification → Stops level (in points). On many brokers 100 points is $1.00 on gold. A stops level of 0 means no fixed minimum, but the spread still applies. More error messages are in MT5 gold errors explained.
An example with the spread (illustrative)
You sell gold at a bid of $4,000.00. The spread is $0.35, so the ask is $4,000.35. You try a stop at $4,000.30. MT5 rejects it: the stop of a sell is checked against the ask, and $4,000.30 is already below it. A stop at $4,005.00 is accepted. This is also why short stops placed tight against a high get hit “without price touching”: see stop-loss hit but price didn’t touch.
How to prevent stop-loss mistakes
- Never open a trade without a stop. Set it in the order window, not afterwards.
- Write your stop distance and lot size down before you click.
- Check the stops level once per account.
- After entering, look at the Trade tab and confirm SL and TP are there.
- Check what the stop risks in money with the gold pip calculator.

Frequently asked questions
How do I set a stop-loss on gold in the MT5 mobile app?
When opening the trade, tap the symbol in Quotes, choose Trade, and fill in the Stop Loss and Take Profit fields before tapping Sell by Market or Buy by Market. For an open trade, go to the Trade tab, long-press the position (Android) or tap it and choose Modify (iPhone), enter the levels and tap Modify.
Why does MT5 say 'invalid stops' on gold?
Your stop-loss or take-profit is too close to the current price, on the wrong side of it, or inside the broker’s minimum distance (the stops level). For a buy, the stop must be below the bid and the target above it; for a sell, the stop must be above the ask. Move the level further away and try again.
Can I use a trailing stop on MT5 mobile?
No. MT5’s built-in trailing stop is only on the desktop terminal, and it runs inside your terminal, so the computer must stay on and connected. On mobile you can trail manually by modifying the stop, or run desktop MT5 on a computer or VPS.
What is the stops level on gold?
It is the minimum distance, in points, between the current price and a new stop-loss, take-profit or pending order, set by the broker. You can see it by right-clicking the symbol in Market Watch and opening Specification. Zero means no fixed minimum, though the spread still applies.
Should I enter stop-loss as a price or as points?
MT5 asks for a price. Work out the price from your plan: for a buy at $4,000 with a $10 stop, enter 3990. On most brokers 1 point of XAUUSD is $0.01, so a $10 stop is 1,000 points, which is why entering ‘points’ from another platform often goes wrong.
Can I move my stop-loss to break-even?
Yes. Modify the position and set the stop to your entry price, or slightly beyond it to cover the spread. Remember that a long’s stop is checked against the bid and a short’s against the ask.
