The short answer
To trade gold on cTrader: find XAUUSD in the watchlist, open its chart, check Lot size and Pip position in the Active Symbol Panel’s Symbol info, then open a New order with Stop loss and Take profit enabled. cTrader lets you set stops in pips, price, percentage of balance or a money amount, so check what a “pip” means on your gold symbol before you use pips.
Decide your QuickTrade mode before you trade: single-click sends orders from the chart instantly. Many traders start with double-click or disabled.
Labels below follow cTrader’s help for the desktop app. cTrader Web, Mac and mobile are similar but not identical.
Step 1: find XAUUSD and open a chart
- Log in with the details your provider sent. cTrader uses a cTrader ID, with your trading accounts listed under it.
- Search for XAUUSD or gold in the watchlist or symbol search. Providers may name it XAUUSD, GOLD or similar; see gold symbol names.
- Click the symbol to open its chart. Add it to a watchlist so you can find it again.
Step 2: check the symbol details
The Active Symbol Panel is shown by default. If it is hidden, use Layout settings → Show Active Symbol Panel, or Ctrl+S, per cTrader’s help. Expand Symbol info with the toggle next to it. The fields to check for gold:
| Field | What it tells you | Why it matters on gold |
|---|---|---|
| Lot size | Ounces in 1 lot | 100 oz means $1 = $100 per lot |
| Pip position | Which decimal is the pip | 2 → 1 pip = $0.01; 1 → 1 pip = $0.10 |
| Minimum change | Smallest price step | Usually $0.01 |
| Minimum and Maximum trade volume | Smallest and largest order | The smallest order sets your minimum risk |
| Commission | Charge per trade or per volume | Add it to every cost estimate |
| Swap long and short / 3-days swaps | Overnight financing and the triple-swap day | Matters for swing trades |
The same panel has Market hours, showing when gold opens and closes with a countdown, and Leverage, which may be lower on metals than on currency pairs.
Why pip position matters. You enter a 100-pip stop on 1 lot of gold. If pip position is 2, that is $1.00 away and risks about $100. If pip position is 1, it is $10.00 away and risks about $1,000. Same number, ten times the risk. The gold pip calculator explains the conventions.
Step 3: volume in lots or units
cTrader can show order volume in lots or in units (ounces for gold), depending on your settings and provider. 100 units of gold is 1 lot on a 100 oz contract; 10 units is 0.10 lot. Check which one your order ticket shows before typing a number, and set the display you’re most comfortable with in the platform settings.
Step 4: place an order with protection
- Open a New order (from the Active Symbol Panel’s New order tab, or the chart).
- Choose the type: market, limit, stop or stop-limit, and the direction.
- Enter the volume.
- Enable Stop loss. Set it in pips, price, percentage of balance or a profit/loss amount. For gold, setting it as a price avoids pip confusion.
- Optionally enable Trailing stop loss (below Stop loss) to make the stop follow price.
- Optionally enable Break-even, with a Trigger (how far price must move in your favour) and an Offset (how far beyond entry the stop moves).
- Enable Take profit. cTrader’s help notes you can set up to five take-profit levels, each with its own Quantity; the last one closes what remains.
- Click Place order.
To change protection later, modify the position from the positions list, or drag the SL, TSL or TP controls on the chart.
A gold order in cTrader. Gold is at $4,000.00. You buy 0.20 lot (20 oz) with a stop at $3,992.00 and a target at $4,016.00. Risk: $8 × 20 = $160. Target: $16 × 20 = $320. Break-even trigger set to $8: once gold reaches $4,008.00, the stop moves to entry plus your offset. Costs are extra.
Step 5: set QuickTrade safely
QuickTrade controls what happens when you click the chart’s buy and sell buttons. Provider guides describe three modes in the platform settings: Single-click, Double-click and Disabled, with a confirmation window before each trade when it is disabled. Check the exact options in your version.
- Single-click sends a market order instantly at the quantity shown. Fast, but a misclick on gold at 1 lot is $100 per $1 against you.
- Double-click adds a small safety step.
- Disabled is the safest while you learn.
QuickTrade quantities can carry over between trades on the same chart. Check the quantity before every click. Our one-click trading guide explains the same risk on MetaTrader.
Step 6: a clean gold chart
- Pick a timeframe stack (for example Daily, H1, M15).
- Add only the indicators you use. ATR (Average True Range) helps size stops on gold; the ATR stop-loss calculator turns it into a distance.
- Save your chart setup as a template from the chart’s template options so new charts open the same way.
- Check the time zone cTrader uses for your charts in the platform settings. It affects where intraday sessions appear and can affect daily candles; see gold daily candle close time.
Common cTrader mistakes on gold
- Entering stops in pips without checking pip position.
- Confusing units and lots in the volume box.
- Single-click QuickTrade left on after a large trade.
- Ignoring commission shown in Symbol info.
- Assuming gold trades around the clock. Market hours show the daily break and weekend closure.

Frequently asked questions
How do I find gold on cTrader?
Search for XAUUSD or gold in the watchlist or symbol search, then open its chart. Your provider may name it XAUUSD, GOLD or something similar. If it does not appear, the provider may not offer gold on that account type.
What is 1 lot of gold on cTrader?
It is set by your provider and shown as Lot size in the Symbol info section of the Active Symbol Panel. On many accounts 1 lot of XAUUSD is 100 ounces, so a $1 move is $100 per lot, but always check, because cTrader can also display volume in units (ounces) rather than lots.
What is a pip on gold in cTrader?
cTrader defines the pip for each symbol by its Pip position, shown in Symbol info. If the pip position is 2, one pip is $0.01; if it is 1, one pip is $0.10. A 100-pip stop therefore means $1 or $10 depending on the provider, so check before entering stops in pips.
How do I set a stop-loss on gold in cTrader?
In the new order window, enable Stop loss and set it in pips, price, percentage of balance or as a money amount. You can also enable Trailing stop loss and Break-even. For an open position, modify it from the positions list or drag the SL control on the chart.
What is QuickTrade in cTrader?
QuickTrade lets you send market orders from the chart’s buy and sell buttons with a single or double click, without a confirmation window. Provider guides describe three settings for it, single-click, double-click or disabled, with disabled bringing back a confirmation step. Check the options in your own cTrader version.
