Stop-limit order in gold trading
A stop-limit order waits for gold to hit a trigger price and then places a limit order at a second price, so it fills at that limit or better, or not at all.
Also called Buy stop limit, Sell stop limit, Stop limit
A stop-limit order combines a stop and a limit. When price reaches the stop (trigger) level, the platform places a limit order at the limit price you set. It gives control over the fill price in exchange for the risk of not being filled.
How it applies to gold trading
On MT5, a buy stop limit has a trigger above the market and a limit price at or below that trigger. The common use is a breakout-and-retest entry: wait for gold to break a level, then buy only if it pulls back to a better price. A sell stop limit works the other way below the market.
Because the order becomes a limit, it cannot fill worse than the limit price, which helps on news spikes. The trade-off is that a strong breakout that never pulls back leaves you out of the move. Stop-limit orders should not be used as stop-losses for the same reason: in a fast fall the limit can be skipped and the position stays open.
Worked example
Example (hypothetical numbers): gold ranges below 4,050. You set a buy stop limit with a trigger at 4,052 and a limit at 4,048. If price breaks to 4,052, a buy limit at 4,048 is placed. If gold then dips to 4,048 it fills; if it runs straight to 4,070 you are not filled and have no position.
A common mistake
Using a stop-limit as a protective stop. If gold gaps through the limit, nothing closes the trade. Protective stops should be plain stop orders.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a buy stop and a buy stop limit?
A buy stop becomes a market order at the trigger and fills at the next available price. A buy stop limit places a limit order after the trigger, so it fills only at the limit price or better.
Is a stop-limit order available on MT4?
No. MT4 offers buy and sell limit and stop orders only. Stop-limit types are available on MT5.
