Stop-loss in gold trading

A stop-loss is an order that closes a gold position at a set price to cap the loss; it guarantees an exit, not the exact price, in fast or gapping markets.

Also called SL, Protective stop

A stop-loss is an exit order placed at the price where the trade idea is wrong. For a long position it is a sell stop below the entry; for a short, a buy stop above. When price reaches it, the position closes at the next available price. It is the single most important order in risk management because it converts an open-ended loss into a planned one.

How it applies to gold trading

The stop distance and the lot size together define the risk. A trader buying gold at 4,000 with a stop at 3,992 risks $8 per ounce; on 0.25 lots that is $8 × 100 × 0.25 = $200. If the account is $20,000 that is 1% of equity. Change the stop to 3,980 and the same $200 risk requires 0.10 lots.

Where the stop goes should be decided by the chart and volatility, not by how much the trader wants to risk. Gold’s noise around a level is often several dollars, so stops placed within that noise are hit by routine movement. ATR-based buffers and placing stops beyond the swing that invalidates the idea are common methods.

A common mistake

Moving the stop further away as price approaches it. The original stop marked where the idea was wrong; moving it turns a planned 1% loss into an unplanned 3% one.

Frequently asked questions

Does a stop-loss guarantee my maximum loss on gold?

No. It guarantees an exit at the next available price. Across a gap or a news spike the fill can be worse than the stop. Only a guaranteed stop, where offered and usually for a fee, caps the loss exactly.

How far should my stop be on XAUUSD?

Far enough that normal noise does not hit it and close enough that the trade is wrong if it does. Many traders use a multiple of ATR or place it beyond the swing high or low that defines the setup, then size the position to fit.

Should I trade gold without a stop-loss?

Trading without a stop means the only limit on the loss is the stop-out level, where most of the account is already gone. A mental stop is not a stop; it is a plan to act later under pressure.
