Pending order in gold trading

A pending order is an instruction to buy or sell gold later, when price reaches a level you set; the main types are buy and sell limits and buy and sell stops.

Also called Entry order, Buy limit, Sell limit, Buy stop, Sell stop

A pending order is an order that waits on the server until price reaches a chosen level, then becomes a live position. MT4 offers four types and MT5 six: buy limit, sell limit, buy stop, sell stop, and on MT5 buy stop limit and sell stop limit.

How it applies to gold trading

The four core types split by direction and logic. Limit orders enter at a better price than now: a buy limit sits below the market, a sell limit above it, for traders who want to buy pullbacks or sell rallies. Stop orders enter at a worse price than now: a buy stop sits above the market, a sell stop below it, for traders who want confirmation that price is breaking out.

Pending orders let gold traders plan entries around session opens and levels without watching the screen. They also carry risks: a buy stop above a range can fill on a news spike and reverse straight away, and limit orders can be missed by a few cents. Most platforms let you attach a stop-loss and take-profit and set an expiry.

Worked example

Example (hypothetical numbers): gold trades at 4,010. You place a buy limit at 4,000 to buy a pullback into support, and a sell stop at 3,985 in case support breaks. If price drops to 4,000 the buy limit fills; if it later breaks 3,985, the sell stop opens a short. Many traders link the two as an OCO so only one can be active.

A common mistake

Mixing up limit and stop. A “buy limit” placed above the market is rejected or fills instantly; check whether you want a better price (limit) or a confirmed break (stop).

Frequently asked questions

What are the types of pending orders on MT5?

Buy limit, sell limit, buy stop, sell stop, buy stop limit and sell stop limit. MT4 has the first four.

Do pending orders fill at the exact price?

Limit orders fill at your price or better. Stop orders become market orders when triggered, so on a fast gold move they can fill with slippage.
