Retest in gold trading

A retest is price returning to a level it just broke, where old resistance acts as new support or the reverse; a lower-risk entry after a gold breakout.

Also called Pullback to the level, Break and retest, Role reversal

A retest is a return to a broken level after a breakout. If gold breaks above 4,050 resistance, rallies to 4,065 and then pulls back to 4,050 before rising again, the pullback is the retest and 4,050 has flipped from resistance to support. Retests let a trader enter closer to the level, with a tighter stop and a clearer invalidation, than chasing the initial break.

How it applies to gold trading

Retests suit gold because the initial breakout is so often noisy. A trader who waits for the retest avoids the trades that reverse immediately (those never retest from the right side) and gets a better price on those that continue. The cost is missing the breakouts that run without pulling back, which happens on strong news days.

A good retest holds the zone, ideally with a rejection candle or a shift in lower-timeframe structure, and the stop goes beyond the zone. A retest that trades deep back into the old range is a warning that the break was a fakeout.

Our lesson on this approach covers how to distinguish a healthy retest from a failed break, including the depth of the pullback and the behavior of the lower-timeframe structure inside the zone.

A common mistake

Entering at the first touch of the level without any sign of holding. The retest is an area to watch for a reaction, not a price to buy blindly.

Frequently asked questions

Does gold always retest a broken level?

No. Strong moves, especially on news, often continue without a retest. Waiting for one means missing those while avoiding many false breaks.

Where does the stop go on a retest trade?

Beyond the far side of the retested zone, far enough that normal noise does not hit it. If that stop makes the target less than the risk, the trade is skipped.
