Breakeven inflation in gold trading
Breakeven inflation is the nominal Treasury yield minus the TIPS yield of the same maturity, the bond market's implied average inflation expectation.
Also called Breakeven rate, Inflation expectations, 10-year breakeven
Breakeven inflation is the difference between the yield on a regular Treasury and the yield on an inflation-protected Treasury (TIPS) with the same maturity. It is the inflation rate at which both bonds would deliver the same return, and is read as the market’s expectation of average inflation over that period.
How it applies to gold trading
Nominal yield = real yield + breakeven inflation. For gold this split matters. Rising breakevens with steady nominal yields mean falling real yields, which has historically been supportive. Rising breakevens can also reflect demand for inflation protection, a theme that draws investors to gold.
Watching breakevens helps explain moves that look contradictory, such as gold rising while nominal yields rise. If the rise in yields is entirely inflation expectations, real yields are unchanged and gold may not suffer.
Worked example
Example (hypothetical numbers): the 10-year Treasury yields 4.20% and 10-year TIPS yield 1.90%, so 10-year breakeven inflation is 2.30%. After a hot CPI report the nominal yield rises to 4.28% and TIPS to 1.92%: breakeven rises to 2.36% and the real yield barely moves. Gold dips briefly, then recovers above its pre-data level.
A common mistake
Treating breakevens as a forecast of actual inflation. They also contain risk premiums and liquidity effects, and they can move for technical reasons.

Frequently asked questions
How is breakeven inflation calculated?
Subtract the TIPS yield from the nominal Treasury yield of the same maturity. With 4.20% and 1.90%, breakeven inflation is 2.30%.
Is rising breakeven inflation good for gold?
Often, if nominal yields do not rise as fast, because real yields then fall. It also reflects inflation worries that can draw buyers to gold.
Where do I find breakeven inflation data?
Public economic databases publish daily 5-year and 10-year breakeven rates, and many charting platforms show them. Our real yields tracker shows the related real yield next to gold.
