Bracket order in gold trading
A bracket order is an entry with a stop-loss and take-profit attached in one go, so the trade's exit on both sides is set the moment it opens.
Also called Attached SL/TP, Bracket, OTOCO
A bracket order is an entry order with two exit orders attached: a stop-loss below and a take-profit above for a long, the reverse for a short. When the entry fills, the two exits become active as a linked pair; when one fills, the other is cancelled.
How it applies to gold trading
Gold can move $5 to $10 in the seconds after a fill around data or session opens. Adding a stop-loss after entry leaves a gap in which the trade is unprotected. A bracket closes that gap because the exits exist from the first tick. On MT5 the same effect comes from filling in the SL and TP fields on the order ticket before sending; futures platforms often call it a bracket or OTOCO.
Brackets also enforce the plan. The risk-reward ratio is decided before the trade, not adjusted in the heat of a move.
Worked example
Example (hypothetical numbers): a buy limit at 4,000 with a stop at 3,994 and a target at 4,018. Risk is $6, reward $18, a 1:3 ratio. On 0.25 lots that is $150 at risk for a $450 target. If the stop fills, the target order is cancelled automatically.
A common mistake
Setting a bracket and then widening the stop when price approaches it. That turns a planned 1R loss into an unplanned bigger one.

Frequently asked questions
How do I place a bracket order on MT5?
Fill in both the stop-loss and take-profit fields on the order ticket before you send it. They become active as soon as the entry fills.
Can I move the stop or target of a bracket after entry?
Yes, both can be modified while the trade is open. Moving a stop to reduce risk is fine; moving it to increase risk breaks the plan.
