Demo account in gold trading

A demo account is a practice account with virtual money and live gold prices, used to learn a platform and test a method before risking real funds.

Also called Practice account, Paper trading

A demo account is a simulated trading account funded with virtual money. It shows live or near-live XAUUSD prices and executes orders as the platform would, but no real money changes hands. It is the standard way to learn a platform’s order tickets, test a strategy’s rules and practice position sizing without cost.

How it applies to gold trading

Demo trading on gold teaches the mechanics: how fast a $10 move changes equity on different lot sizes, what the spread does at the daily break, how a stop behaves during CPI. A structured demo period, with a fixed risk per trade and a journal, produces a sample of trades that can be measured for win rate and expectancy before any real capital is involved.

Demo accounts differ from live ones in ways that matter. Fills are often better than real fills because there is no real liquidity constraint, slippage may be absent, and swaps may not be charged. Most importantly, the emotional weight of a loss is missing, so a method that works on demo may be hard to follow live.

The practice plan on this site uses a demo account for a fixed thirty-day period with a written rule set and a journal, so the output is a measurable record rather than a vague sense of readiness.

A common mistake

Trading a demo with a balance far larger than the intended real account, or with no risk rules. A $100,000 demo traded at 5 lots teaches nothing about running a $1,000 live account at 0.02 lots.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I trade gold on demo?

Long enough to collect a meaningful sample of trades under your written rules, often a month or more, and until you can follow the rules without exceptions. The number of trades matters more than the number of weeks.

Are demo prices the same as live gold prices?

They are usually fed from the same source, but execution can be more generous: less slippage, no requotes and sometimes no swap. Expect live results to be a little worse than demo.
