GDP in gold trading
GDP, gross domestic product, measures the total output of the US economy; growth surprises move yields and the dollar, and through them the gold price.
Also called Gross domestic product, Advance GDP, Economic growth
GDP (gross domestic product) is the total value of goods and services produced in an economy. The US Bureau of Economic Analysis publishes quarterly GDP at 8:30 a.m. New York time in three estimates: advance, second and third. The annualized growth rate and the price index inside the report are the figures traders watch.
How it applies to gold trading
Strong growth tends to support higher yields and a firmer dollar, which can weigh on gold, while weak growth raises rate-cut expectations and can help it. The report’s price measures, the GDP deflator and core PCE for the quarter, sometimes matter more than growth itself, because they hint at the monthly inflation data to come.
The advance estimate moves markets most; later revisions usually matter less. If GDP lands on the same morning as other data, the combined surprise sets the direction.
Worked example
Example (hypothetical numbers): consensus for advance GDP is 2.0% and the release shows 0.8%, while quarterly core PCE inflation is in line. Ten-year yields fall 7 basis points and gold rises from 3,995 to 4,018. Had core PCE also been hot, the growth miss might have been offset and gold could have finished lower.
A common mistake
Reading only the headline growth number. Check the inflation components in the same release.

Frequently asked questions
Is strong GDP good or bad for gold?
Strong growth tends to lift yields and the dollar, which can weigh on gold. Weak growth can support it through rate-cut expectations.
Which GDP release moves gold most?
The advance estimate, the first release for each quarter. The second and third estimates usually cause smaller moves.
Why did gold rise on strong GDP?
Other parts of the report, such as softer inflation components, or other news the same day can outweigh the growth figure. Check the details and the dollar’s reaction.
