Chikou Span in gold trading

The Chikou Span is Ichimoku's lagging line, the latest close plotted 26 periods back; above past prices it confirms gold's upward momentum, below them bearish.

Also called Lagging span, Lagging line, Chikou

The Chikou Span (lagging span) is simply today’s closing price plotted 26 periods in the past. It lets the trader compare the current close with the price action of 26 bars ago at a glance.

How it applies to gold trading

If the Chikou Span sits above the candles from 26 periods earlier, current price is higher than it was then, confirming bullish momentum; below them confirms bearish momentum. When it runs into old candles, it can meet resistance or support from that earlier price action.

In the full Ichimoku checklist, a bullish trade on gold typically needs price above the cloud, Tenkan above Kijun and the Chikou Span above price and clear of obstacles. If the Chikou is tangled in old candles, momentum is unclear and many Ichimoku traders wait.

Worked example

Example (hypothetical numbers): on the 4-hour chart gold closes at 4,050. Twenty-six bars ago the candle’s range was 4,000 to 4,020. The Chikou Span plots 4,050 above that candle, confirming momentum. If gold drops to 4,010, the Chikou would sit inside that old candle, a warning that the trend is stalling.

Some traders also check whether the Chikou Span has open space ahead of it, meaning no old candles in its path for the next few bars, before entering.

A common mistake

Thinking the Chikou Span predicts. It is current price shifted back, a confirmation tool, not a forecast.

The current close plotted 26 periods back, used to compare today’s price with the price action of 26 bars ago.

How do I use the Chikou Span on gold?

As confirmation: for longs, look for it above past price and clear of nearby candles; for shorts, below.
