Kumo in gold trading

The kumo is the shaded Ichimoku cloud between Senkou Span A and B, plotted 26 periods ahead; it marks support, resistance and trend bias on the gold chart.

Also called Ichimoku cloud band, Senkou Span A, Senkou Span B, Leading spans

The kumo is the cloud of the Ichimoku system, the area between two lines. Senkou Span A is the average of the Tenkan-sen and Kijun-sen. Senkou Span B is the midpoint of the 52-period high-low range. Both are plotted 26 periods into the future, which is why the cloud extends past the last candle.

How it applies to gold trading

Gold above the kumo suggests a bullish bias, below it bearish. The cloud’s edges act as support and resistance zones: in uptrends, the top of the cloud often catches pullbacks. Its thickness indicates strength: a thick cloud is harder to break than a thin one. When Span A crosses above Span B, the cloud ahead turns bullish (a “kumo twist”), an early hint of a possible change in trend.

Because the cloud is projected forward, traders can see where support or resistance will sit in the coming sessions, useful for planning entries and stops.

Worked example

Example (hypothetical numbers): on the daily chart, Senkou Span A is at 3,960 and Span B at 3,920 under current price of 4,010. A pullback stalls at 3,962, near the cloud top, and gold rallies. A daily close below 3,920 would place price under the cloud and flip the bias.

A common mistake

Trading inside a thick cloud. Price inside the kumo is in equilibrium and directional signals are unreliable.

Frequently asked questions

How is the Ichimoku cloud calculated?

Senkou Span A is the average of the Tenkan and Kijun; Senkou Span B is the midpoint of the 52-period range. Both are plotted 26 periods ahead and the space between them is the cloud.

What is a kumo twist?

The point where Span A and Span B cross, changing the cloud’s color. It can be an early sign of a trend change.

Why is the cloud plotted ahead of price?

Ichimoku shifts the spans 26 periods forward so traders can see where future support and resistance are likely to be.
