CHoCH in gold trading

A CHoCH, or change of character, is the first break of structure against the prevailing trend, such as a lower low in an uptrend, hinting at reversal.

Also called Change of character, Market structure shift, MSS

A change of character (CHoCH) is the first structural break against the current trend. In an uptrend, where price has been making higher highs and higher lows, a close below the most recent higher low is a CHoCH. It does not confirm a downtrend, which would need a lower high and another lower low, but it tells the trader that the sequence has been interrupted. ICT uses the similar term market structure shift (MSS).

How it applies to gold trading

CHoCH is most useful on gold after a liquidity sweep. The common sequence: price sweeps a prior high (taking buy stops), fails to continue, and then closes below the last higher low on the lower timeframe. That CHoCH is the first confirmation that the sweep was a reversal, and the order block or fair value gap created by the move down becomes the entry for a short. Without the CHoCH, the sweep might just be a pause in an uptrend.

Because the higher timeframe decides which CHoCHs matter, a 5-minute CHoCH inside a strong 4-hour uptrend is usually a pullback signal rather than a reversal.

The market structure lesson shows the full sequence of sweep, change of character, pullback and continuation on gold, with the stop and target placement for each step.

A common mistake

Treating a CHoCH as a complete reversal signal and shorting with a large position. It is the first hint; the pullback that follows is where the trade is usually taken, with the stop beyond the sweep high.

Frequently asked questions

Is a CHoCH the same as a reversal?

No. It is the first break against the trend and raises the probability of a reversal. Confirmation comes from the next swing: a lower high followed by another lower low.

Which timeframe should I use to spot a CHoCH on gold?

The timeframe one or two steps below the one that defines your trend. A 15-minute CHoCH is a common entry trigger for traders working from a 4-hour bias.
