Volatility squeeze in gold trading

A volatility squeeze is a period of unusually tight gold ranges, often shown by Bollinger Bands inside Keltner channels, that tends to precede a breakout.

Also called Bollinger squeeze, TTM squeeze, Compression, Low volatility contraction

A volatility squeeze occurs when price ranges contract to unusually low levels. The common indicator version compares Bollinger Bands (standard deviation) with Keltner channels (ATR): when the Bollinger Bands move inside the Keltner channels, volatility is compressed. When they expand back outside, the squeeze “fires.”

How it applies to gold trading

Volatility tends to alternate between contraction and expansion. Gold often compresses before scheduled events such as CPI or FOMC, during holiday periods and in the Asian session, then expands sharply. A squeeze does not tell you the direction, only that a larger move is likely. Traders combine it with the higher-timeframe trend, momentum readings or a breakout of the squeeze range.

Squeezes can last longer than expected, and the first breakout can be a fake. A retest of the range edge or a close outside it adds confirmation.

Worked example

Example (hypothetical numbers): on the 1-hour chart, Bollinger Bands narrow to a $9 width inside Keltner channels $14 wide, with gold ranging 4,006 to 4,014 before NFP. After the release gold breaks to 4,028 and the bands expand. A trader who bought a close above 4,015 with a stop at 4,005 risked $10 for the $20 move.

A common mistake

Guessing direction before the squeeze fires. The compression says “big move soon,” not which way.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Bollinger squeeze?

A period when Bollinger Bands narrow sharply, often measured by the bands moving inside Keltner channels, signaling low volatility before a likely expansion.

Which way will gold break after a squeeze?

The squeeze itself does not say. Use the higher-timeframe trend, momentum or a confirmed breakout to decide.

Do squeezes form before gold news?

Often. Traders hold back before major data, so ranges tighten and then expand when the number is released.
