Volume profile in gold trading

A volume profile shows how much volume traded at each price over a period; its point of control and value area mark where gold found acceptance.

Also called Market profile, Point of control, Value area

A volume profile is a histogram of volume by price rather than by time. Over the chosen period (a session, a week, a swing) it shows which prices attracted the most trading. The point of control (POC) is the price with the highest volume; the value area is the range, usually 70% of volume, around it. High-volume nodes are areas of acceptance; low-volume nodes are prices the market moved through quickly and may move through quickly again.

How it applies to gold trading

Gold traders use profiles to find levels that are not visible on a candlestick chart. A session POC often acts as a magnet the next day; the edges of the value area act as support and resistance; a low-volume gap between two nodes is a place where a breakout can accelerate. Combined with session timing, a profile shows whether the London session built value above or below the Asian range, which frames the New York session.

Spot platforms build profiles from tick volume, which is a proxy. Futures-based profiles (COMEX GC) use real traded volume and are the reference for most professional use.

Our volume profile lesson explains how to build session and composite profiles for gold, how to identify the point of control and value area, and how to trade from low-volume nodes.

A common mistake

Reading the POC as a target in every case. It is a level of agreement; price returns to it in balanced markets and leaves it behind in trending ones.

Frequently asked questions

Is volume profile accurate on XAUUSD?

On spot platforms it uses tick volume, which approximates activity reasonably but differs between feeds. Futures-based profiles use real volume and are more reliable for precise levels.

What is the point of control?

The single price at which the most volume traded over the profile’s period. It marks the level of greatest agreement and often attracts price when the market is balanced.
