Swap dealers in gold trading

Swap dealers are COT report traders, mainly banks, who use gold futures to hedge over-the-counter swaps and forwards they have written for clients.

Also called Swap dealer category, Bullion banks

Swap dealers are a category in the CFTC’s disaggregated Commitments of Traders report. They are entities, mostly large banks, that deal in swaps and other over-the-counter derivatives and use futures to hedge the risk from those deals. In gold, they include the bullion banks that provide forwards, swaps and leases to producers, investors and central banks.

How it applies to gold trading

A swap dealer’s futures position reflects its clients’ OTC positions in reverse. If clients buy gold exposure through swaps, the dealer is short to them and buys futures to hedge, and vice versa. Swap dealers have often been net short gold futures, offsetting long exposure sold to investors, but the position varies.

For a gold trader, the swap dealer line adds context to the COT picture: changes may reflect OTC client flows that do not appear elsewhere. Like the commercial line, it is positioning information released with a lag, not a timing signal.

Worked example

Example (hypothetical numbers): in one week’s COT data, swap dealers’ net short rises by 12,000 contracts while managed money net long rises by 9,000. That suggests investors bought gold both on exchange and through OTC products the banks then hedged.

A common mistake

Assuming swap dealer shorts are directional bets by banks. They are mainly hedges of client positions.
