Commercials in gold trading
Commercials are COT report traders who use gold futures to hedge business exposure, such as miners, refiners and fabricators; they are usually net short gold.
Also called Producer/merchant/processor/user, Commercial hedgers, Smart hedgers
Commercials are participants who trade futures to hedge an underlying business. In the CFTC’s disaggregated Commitments of Traders report for gold they appear as “producer/merchant/processor/user”: miners, refiners, bullion dealers and jewelry or industrial fabricators. In the older legacy report, the commercial category also includes swap dealers.
How it applies to gold trading
Commercials typically sell futures to lock in prices for metal they will produce or hold, so as a group they are usually net short gold, and their short position tends to grow as prices rise. Their position often moves opposite to managed money (speculators). When commercials are unusually lightly net short, some analysts read it as a sign that speculative length has been flushed out.
COT data is released on Fridays at 3:30 p.m. Eastern time with positions as of the previous Tuesday, so it describes positioning, not timing.
Worked example
Example (hypothetical numbers): over two months gold rallies from 3,800 to 4,050. The producer/merchant net short grows from 120,000 to 175,000 contracts while managed money net long rises from 90,000 to 160,000. The commercial short is a mirror of speculative buying and hedging into higher prices, not a bearish bet.
A common mistake
Reading a large commercial short as a forecast of falling gold. It mostly reflects hedging.

Frequently asked questions
Who are commercials in the gold COT report?
Producers, merchants, processors and users such as miners, refiners, dealers and fabricators who hedge business exposure.
Why are commercials net short gold?
They sell futures to hedge metal they produce or hold, so their futures position offsets a long physical exposure.
Do commercials predict gold prices?
Not directly. Their positions mainly reflect hedging. Extremes are sometimes read as sentiment signals alongside managed money.
Where do commercials appear in the legacy COT report?
In the legacy report the commercial category combines producers, merchants, processors, users and swap dealers. The disaggregated report separates them.
