Supertrend in gold trading

Supertrend is an ATR-based trend line that flips below price in uptrends and above it in downtrends; gold traders use it as a trend filter and trailing stop.

Also called Supertrend indicator, ATR trend line

Supertrend is a trend-following indicator that draws a single line based on the bar’s midpoint, (high + low) ÷ 2, plus or minus a multiple of ATR. Common settings are ATR 10 with a multiplier of 3. The line sits below price in an uptrend and above it in a downtrend, flipping when price closes through it.

How it applies to gold trading

The appeal is simplicity: green line below price, look for longs; red line above, look for shorts. The line only moves in the trend’s direction, so it doubles as a trailing stop. On gold’s strong trend days, Supertrend can keep a trader in the move for many hours.

In ranges, it flips repeatedly, producing a string of small losses. Many traders filter Supertrend signals with a higher-timeframe trend, a moving average or ADX, and tune the multiplier to the timeframe: tighter on 15-minute charts, wider on daily.

Worked example

Example (hypothetical numbers): on the 1-hour chart with ATR(10) = $5 and multiplier 3, a bar has high 4,030 and low 4,020 (midpoint 4,025). The lower band is 4,025 − 15 = 4,010. With price closing at 4,028 and the line green, a long with a stop just under 4,010 risks about $19.

A common mistake

Trading every flip without a filter. In sideways gold markets the flips cost spread and stop-outs.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best Supertrend settings for gold?

ATR 10 with a multiplier of 3 is the common default. Intraday traders often test lower multipliers; swing traders higher ones.

Does Supertrend repaint?

Its value can change during the current bar, but closed bars do not change. Act on closed-bar signals.

Is Supertrend good for gold scalping?

On very short timeframes it flips often. It works better as a trend filter from a higher timeframe.
