Midnight open in gold trading

The midnight open is gold's price at 12:00 a.m. New York time; ICT traders use it as the true daily open, buying below it in bullish days and selling above it.

Also called New York midnight open, True day open, 00:00 open

The midnight open is the opening price of the 00:00 New York time candle. In ICT teaching it is treated as the “true day open,” a more meaningful daily reference than the 5 p.m. or 6 p.m. rollover open, because it precedes the London session that often sets the day’s manipulation move.

How it applies to gold trading

The model ties into premium and discount. On a day with bullish bias, ICT traders prefer to buy below the midnight open (discount relative to the day) and expect the London or New York manipulation leg to drop under it before the real move higher. On a bearish day, they sell above it. The line also gives a quick read on the day: trading above it suggests buyers are in control so far, below it sellers.

Because platform server times differ, traders draw the level from a New York time chart or convert carefully, including across daylight saving shifts.

Worked example

Example (hypothetical numbers): the midnight open is 4,010 and the daily bias is bullish. London drops gold to 4,002, below the midnight open, sweeping the Asian low. A trader buys at 4,004 after a 5-minute structure shift, with a stop at 3,999 and a target at the previous day high, 4,030.

A common mistake

Drawing the level at the platform’s midnight server time rather than midnight in New York.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the midnight open important in ICT?

ICT treats it as the true daily open, a reference for whether price is at a premium or discount within the day.

How do I find the midnight open on my platform?

Convert midnight New York time to your platform’s server time, remembering daylight saving changes, and mark that candle’s open.

Is the midnight open the same as the daily open?

No. Most platforms start the day at the 5 p.m. or 6 p.m. New York rollover. The midnight open comes about six or seven hours later.
