Long and short in gold trading

Going long means buying gold to profit if the price rises; going short means selling gold you do not own to profit if it falls, both easy on XAUUSD.

Also called Going long, Going short, Short selling, Buy and sell

Long and short describe the direction of a position. A long position is a buy that profits when the price rises. A short position is a sale that profits when the price falls; on a CFD or futures contract you can sell first and buy back later without owning any gold.

How it applies to gold trading

On XAUUSD, shorting is as simple as pressing sell. There is no need to borrow metal, although the overnight swap is often charged on both directions. A long closes on the bid and a short closes on the ask, which matters when the spread widens. Profit and loss are symmetrical: a $10 move is worth $1,000 per lot whichever way you are positioned.

Gold’s longer history has more up years than down, so many traders carry a long bias. Short trades still make sense when the structure is bearish, real yields are rising or the dollar is strengthening, as long as the same risk rules apply.

Worked example

Example (hypothetical numbers): you sell 0.30 lots at 4,050 and buy back at 4,030. Profit: $20 × 100 × 0.30 = $600. Had gold risen to 4,060 instead and hit your stop, the loss would have been $10 × 100 × 0.30 = $300.

A common mistake

Believing a short has unlimited risk and therefore needs no stop, or that a long cannot lose much because “gold always comes back.” Both directions need a stop and sized risk.

Frequently asked questions

Can you short gold?

Yes. On a gold CFD or futures contract you sell first and buy back later. You profit if the price falls and lose if it rises.

Does a short gold position pay or receive swap?

It depends on the platform’s rates. On many platforms both long and short gold positions pay swap; check the swap short figure in the specification.
