Liquidity provider in gold trading
A liquidity provider is a bank or trading firm that streams bid and ask prices and takes the other side of trades, forming the price feed behind XAUUSD quotes.
Also called LP, Price feed, Market maker
A liquidity provider is an institution, usually a bank or a non-bank market-making firm, that continuously quotes prices at which it will buy and sell. A retail platform aggregates prices from one or more liquidity providers to build the XAUUSD bid and ask you see.
How it applies to gold trading
Spot gold has no central exchange, so every platform’s quote is only as good as its feed. When liquidity providers widen their quotes or step back, as they do at the daily rollover, on the Sunday open and around major data, the retail spread widens too. When several providers compete, spreads tighten.
This also explains why two charts can disagree by a few cents or more. Each platform blends a different set of feeds, adds its own markup and may filter or smooth spikes differently. Highs and lows, especially on fast news candles, can therefore differ between platforms and between your platform and a charting site.
Worked example
Example (hypothetical numbers): three providers quote gold at 4,001.10/4,001.40, 4,001.15/4,001.35 and 4,001.05/4,001.45. An aggregator taking the best bid and best ask shows 4,001.15/4,001.35, a $0.20 spread. If two providers pull their quotes during a data release, the remaining one at 4,000.20/4,002.80 becomes the price, a $2.60 spread.
A common mistake
Treating one platform’s wick as the “true” high or low. Use levels as zones a few dollars wide and expect small differences between feeds.

Frequently asked questions
Why do gold prices differ between platforms?
Each platform builds its quote from its own liquidity providers and adds its own markup, so prices can differ by a few cents in normal conditions and by more during fast markets.
Do liquidity providers affect my spread?
Yes. The spread you see starts with the providers’ quotes. When they widen or withdraw, the platform’s spread widens too.
