Why Does the Gold Spread Widen at Rollover? XAUUSD at the Daily Close

Every weekday, just before 5:00 pm New York time, the gold spread on your platform can jump to several times its normal size. Stops get hit, pending orders fill badly and new traders think something is broken. Here's what happens at rollover, what the data says about that hour, and what to do about it.

The short answer

The gold spread widens at rollover because it is the least liquid moment of the trading day. Every weekday at 5:00 pm New York time the gold market closes for about an hour, the trading day rolls over, and overnight swap is charged. In the minutes around that pause, banks and liquidity providers quote fewer and wider prices, so your broker’s XAUUSD spread can widen to several times its normal size.

Price itself is usually quiet at that time. The danger is not the move, it is the gap between bid and ask, which can trigger stops and fill pending orders at worse prices than you expected.

What “rollover” actually is

Three things happen at the same moment each weekday:

  1. The trading day ends. Gold’s day runs from 6:00 pm to 5:00 pm New York time, so the daily candle closes at 5:00 pm on most broker servers.
  2. The market pauses. COMEX gold futures and most spot gold feeds stop for about an hour, from 5:00 to 6:00 pm New York time, Monday to Thursday. On Friday the pause becomes the weekend.
  3. Swaps are charged. Any position still open is charged or paid the overnight financing. Many brokers apply three days of swap on Wednesday night to cover the weekend. Our spread and swap costs guide shows how to read your broker’s rates.

What two years of real data show about that hour

We measured every hourly bar of COMEX gold futures (GC=F) from 30 October 2024 to 30 October 2026, about 11,450 bars, and grouped them by New York hour. Range is the high minus the low of the bar.

Hour (New York time) What it is Mean range Median range
9:00 to 10:00 am Busiest hour of the day $27.28 $23.20
8:00 to 9:00 am US data releases $24.70 $19.30
All hours Average hour $17.35 $13.00
4:00 to 5:00 pm Last hour before rollover $11.95 $7.60
5:00 to 6:00 pm Daily break no trading no trading
6:00 to 7:00 pm First hour after the reopen $16.87 $10.60

The last hour before rollover is the quietest hour of the whole trading day, with a median range about 40% smaller than an average hour and about a third of the busiest hour. Across 468 weekday breaks, the price change from the 5:00 pm close to the 6:00 pm reopen had a median of only $0.50 (mean $1.24).

So the price barely moves, yet traders get stopped out. That is the spread at work. Futures bars don’t contain any broker’s spread, so the data can’t tell you how wide yours goes, only that this is the hour when the fewest people are trading. The hour-by-hour picture for your own time zone is on when does gold move the most.

Why spreads widen when liquidity is thin

A spread is the gap between the best price someone will buy at (bid) and the best price someone will sell at (ask). In busy hours many banks and market makers compete, so the gap is tight. At rollover:

  • Liquidity providers step back while their systems close the day, settle positions and roll swaps.
  • The futures market pauses, so there is no central price for an hour.
  • Risk is higher for anyone quoting, because the next price after the pause is uncertain. Wider quotes cover that risk.

Your broker takes those wider quotes and adds its own mark-up, so the spread you see can jump from a few tens of cents to several dollars for a few minutes.

An illustrative example

You are short 0.20 lot at $4,000 with a stop at $4,004. At 4:58 pm New York time the bid is $4,002.50, and your normal spread of $0.30 would put the ask at $4,002.80, safely below your stop. Then the spread widens to $1.80. The ask becomes $4,004.30, your stop triggers, and you lose about $86 on a market that never moved against you on the chart.

The stop-loss hit without touching guide explains why short stops are checked against the ask.

What to do: step-by-step

  1. Learn your broker’s rollover pattern. Turn on the ask line (F8 → Show Ask line) and watch the spread from 4:45 to 6:15 pm New York time for a few days. Note how wide it gets and for how long.
  2. Don’t open new trades in the last 15 minutes before 5:00 pm New York time or in the first minutes after 6:00 pm.
  3. Cancel or move tight pending orders that sit within a few dollars of price before the break.
  4. Widen tight stops or close the trade. If your stop is within a widened spread of price, the spread alone can close you out. A wider stop with a smaller size keeps the same risk; the position size calculator does the maths.
  5. Check the swap. Holding through rollover costs or pays a day’s swap, three days on Wednesday at many brokers. The gold swap calculator shows the amount.

How to prevent rollover problems

  • Put the rollover time in your trading plan, in your time zone, and update it when US clocks change.
  • If you scalp, stop trading 30 minutes before rollover. The hour has the smallest range of the day, so there is little to gain.
  • If you swing trade, set stops far enough away that a spread spike is irrelevant. The ATR stop-loss calculator helps.
  • Treat the Sunday open as an extreme version of rollover. See gold Monday gaps.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the gold spread widen at rollover?

Because liquidity is at its lowest of the day. At 5:00 pm New York time the gold market pauses for about an hour, banks and liquidity providers step back, and fewer prices are quoted. With fewer bids and offers, the gap between them widens, and brokers pass that wider spread on to you.

What time is gold rollover?

5:00 pm New York time on weekdays, when the trading day ends and overnight swaps are charged. That is 21:00 UTC while the US is on daylight saving time and 22:00 UTC in winter. In India it is 02:30 or 03:30 IST the next morning.

How long does the wide spread last?

It usually builds in the last minutes before 5:00 pm New York time and stays wide for the first minutes after the market reopens at 6:00 pm. The exact window depends on your broker. Watch the spread on your own platform for a week to learn its pattern.

Is gold actually volatile at rollover?

No, the opposite. On two years of hourly COMEX data the last hour before the break had a median range of $7.60, the quietest hour of the day, against $13.00 for an average hour. The problem is thin liquidity and wide spreads, not big moves.

Should I close my gold trades before rollover?

If your stop is tight, or you trade short-term, it is often sensible. Swing traders with wider stops usually hold, because the spread is small relative to their stop. Either way, avoid opening new trades in the last minutes before 5:00 pm New York time.

Do I pay swap at rollover?

Yes. Positions open at the rollover time are charged or credited the overnight swap, and many brokers charge three days on Wednesday night to cover the weekend. Use the swap calculator to estimate the cost for your size.
