Why Does Gold Move So Fast? XAUUSD vs Forex Daily Range (Real Data)

Coming from forex, gold feels like a different sport: a normal day moves more than a big week on EURUSD, and a position size that felt safe can empty an account by lunchtime. We compared a year of daily ranges for gold and four major currency pairs. Here are the numbers, the reasons, and what they mean for your lot size and stops.

The short answer

Gold moves fast because it reacts to rates, the dollar, inflation, central bank buying and geopolitics all at once, with less liquidity than the big currency pairs, and because its high price turns small percentage moves into big dollar moves. Over the past year, gold’s median daily range was 2.19% of its price (about $96). EURUSD’s was 0.42% (48 pips). That makes gold roughly five times as volatile in percentage terms.

For your account, the gap is even bigger: a typical day’s range is worth about $96 on 0.01 lot of gold but about $4.80 on 0.01 lot of EURUSD. The same lot size carries about twenty times the swing. That is why gold needs smaller lots and wider stops.

The data: gold vs four major pairs

Daily bars from Yahoo Finance, 30 October 2025 to 30 October 2026. Gold is COMEX futures (GC=F). Range is the daily high minus the low. We use the median because a handful of extreme days distort the average.

Market Median daily range As % of price Average daily range Range on 0.01 lot (approx.)
Gold (XAUUSD / GC) $95.70 2.19% $116.05 (2.57%) $95.70
EURUSD 48 pips 0.42% 53 pips (0.46%) $4.80
GBPUSD 64 pips 0.48% 69 pips (0.51%) $6.40
USDJPY 73 pips 0.47% 90 pips (0.57%) about $4.65 at 157
AUDUSD 42 pips 0.60% 47 pips (0.67%) $4.20

The 0.01-lot column assumes 1 oz per 0.01 lot for gold and 1,000 units per 0.01 lot for currencies, the usual contract sizes. For USDJPY the dollar value depends on the yen rate.

Over two years (30 October 2024 to 30 October 2026) gold’s median range was $71.50 (1.82%) against 57 pips (0.50%) for EURUSD, still more than three and a half times as much. Gold’s range has grown with its price and the news flow; how much does gold move per day explains the ATR and daily range measures, and the live figure is on the gold volatility tool.

Why gold is so fast

  1. Many drivers at once. US yields, the dollar, inflation prints, Fed decisions, central bank purchases, ETF flows and geopolitics all feed into one price. A currency pair mostly reflects two economies.
  2. Thinner liquidity. EURUSD is the most traded market in the world. Gold is deep, but not that deep, so large orders and news move it further.
  3. Safe-haven flows. In a crisis, money rushes into gold quickly and leaves just as quickly when fear fades.
  4. High price. At around $4,000, a 1% move is $40. A 1% move on EURUSD is about 110 pips.
  5. Speculative positioning. When many traders are on the same side, a surprise forces them out together. Late January 2026 showed this: gold futures hit about $5,627 on 28 January and then fell hundreds of dollars within days.

What it means for your lot size

Here is the classic mistake, with illustrative numbers. A trader with $1,000 used to trade 0.10 lot of EURUSD with a 20-pip stop: $20 risk, 2% of the account. They switch to gold at the same 0.10 lot.

EURUSD 0.10 lot Gold 0.10 lot
Value of a typical day’s range 48 pips × $1 = $48 $95.70 × 10 oz = $957
A stop at 25% of the typical range 12 pips = $12 $24 = $240
Share of a $1,000 account 1.2% 24%

Same lot, same logic, twenty times the risk. On gold that trader needs 0.01 lot to keep a sensible stop at a sensible risk. The position size calculator does the arithmetic, and best lot size for gold by account size has the full table.

What it means for your stops

A stop smaller than gold’s normal noise will be hit by routine movement. In our hourly data, the median hourly range was $13.00, and the busiest hour (9:00 to 10:00 am New York) had a median of $23.20. A $3 stop on an M15 entry is inside a normal minute of the New York session.

  1. Base stops on volatility, for example 1 to 1.5 times the ATR of your timeframe. The ATR stop-loss calculator does this.
  2. Reduce size so the wider stop risks the same money.
  3. Know the fast hours: when does gold move the most shows the average range by hour in your time zone.
  4. Check the calendar: the gold economic calendar shows the releases that cause the biggest bursts.

Beginner guidance: step-by-step

  1. Start on demo for at least a few weeks with your real intended size; our demo practice plan gives a routine.
  2. Risk 0.5% to 1% per trade while learning.
  3. Use 0.01 lot until your account and stop distance say otherwise.
  4. Trade one session, ideally the one you can watch, and avoid the first minutes after major releases.
  5. Learn the value of $1: on 0.01 lot it’s $1, on 0.10 lot $10, on 1 lot $100. The gold pip calculator confirms it for your symbol.
  6. Never add to a loser to “get it back”. Gold’s range punishes that quickly; see margin call and stop-out.

How to stay in control

  • Recalculate size every trade; gold’s range changes from month to month.
  • Cap your daily loss and stop trading when you hit it.
  • Journal how far price moved against you before working; it tells you if your stops are too tight.

Frequently asked questions

Why does gold move so fast?

Gold reacts to several big forces at once, US interest rates and real yields, the dollar, inflation data, central bank buying and geopolitical risk, and it has fewer market makers than the main currency pairs. Its high price also means even a small percentage move is many dollars. Over the past year its median daily range was about 2.2% of the price, against about 0.4% for EURUSD.

How much more volatile is gold than EURUSD?

In our data from 30 October 2025 to 30 October 2026, gold futures had a median daily range of 2.19% of the price and EURUSD 0.42%, so gold moved about five times as much in percentage terms. In dollar terms for the same lot fraction the difference is far bigger, because of contract sizes.

How many dollars does gold move in a day?

Over the past year the median daily high-to-low range of COMEX gold futures was $95.70 and the average $116.05. Over two years the median was $71.50, because gold was cheaper and calmer in late 2024. Today’s figure is on our gold volatility tool.

What lot size should a beginner use on gold?

Work it out from your risk, not from habit. With a $1,000 account risking 1% ($10) and a $10 stop, the size is 0.01 lot. Many beginners who trade 0.10 lot on gold, a normal size on EURUSD, are risking ten times more than they think.

Is gold harder to trade than forex?

It isn’t harder to analyse, but it is less forgiving of oversized positions and tight stops. The bigger range means you need wider stops and smaller lot sizes to risk the same money. Traders who adjust their sizing usually find gold manageable.

When does gold move fastest during the day?

Around US data releases at 8:30 am New York time and during the following two hours. In our hourly data the 9:00 to 10:00 am New York hour had the largest median range ($23.20), against $13.00 for an average hour.
