Gold News, 30 October 2026: 7 stories moving XAUUSD

US inflation came in exactly where forecasters expected, growth beat, and the ECB and Bank of Japan both held while pointing to December hikes. Gold barely reacted to the data, then drifted to $4,002 in Asia on Friday, almost unchanged on the week. Today brings the US Employment Cost Index at 12:30 GMT (18:00 IST) and the weekly and monthly close.

PCE lands on forecast, GDP beats at 3.4%; ECB and BoJ hold as gold sinks toward $4,000

01
Inflation

September PCE matches forecasts: headline 0.5% m/m and 3.6% y/y, core 0.3% and 3.1%

The PCE price index rose 0.5% in September and 3.6% on the year, up from 3.4% in August, while core PCE rose 0.3% and 3.1%, up from 3.0%. All four numbers matched LSEG economist forecasts, Fox Business reported, and they line up with TD Securities’ forecasts of 0.49%, 3.6%, 0.32% and 3.1% cited here yesterday. Energy did most of the work, and the personal saving rate slipped to 3.8% from 4.0%.

Why it matters for gold:

An in-line print gives the Fed no new reason to change course, so the December debate carries on rather than being settled. That is why the release produced one of the quietest data hours of the month for gold. Our PCE, GDP and ECB reaction analysis puts the numbers next to the 15-minute gold moves, and Gold and PCE inflation explains the gauge.

Growth

Q3 GDP grows at a 3.4% annual rate, well above TD's 2.5% and the 3.2% consensus

The BEA’s advance estimate put real GDP growth at an annual rate of 3.4% in the third quarter, up from 2.2% in the second. TD Securities had forecast 2.5% and LSEG’s consensus was 3.2%. The quarterly PCE price index rose at a 2.1% annual rate, down from 5.0% in Q2, and core PCE at 2.5%, down from 3.3%.

Why it matters for gold:

Strong growth backs Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s comment on Wednesday that the economy was running above 3%, and it removes the argument that hikes are hurting activity. For gold it keeps the hawkish case alive even with inflation on forecast. Our explainer on gold and the US GDP report shows how growth data usually feeds into XAUUSD.

Technicals

Gold moves only $16 in the PCE hour; December hike odds ease to between 75% and 80%

In Yahoo Finance hourly data for COMEX gold futures (GC=F), the 12:00 GMT bar that held the 12:30 release traded between $4,027.8 and $4,043.9 and closed at $4,031.9, against a $44 swing in the Fed statement hour on Wednesday. Futures settled at $4,031.4 and fell to $4,002.0 in Asia on Friday. CME FedWatch put the chance of a December hike at 79.6% after the data, down from 84.2% a day earlier, Fox Business reported, and FXStreet cited 74.9% later in the evening.

Why it matters for gold:

A small reaction to an in-line number is normal: there was no surprise to price. The slide that followed came with the dollar steady and hike odds still high, which kept the pressure on gold near $4,000. Our December Fed hike odds guide lists the data still to come, and how to read CME FedWatch shows how to track the number.

ECB holds at 2.50% after debating a hike; Lagarde says the direction is 'quite clear'

The ECB kept its deposit rate at 2.50%, with the main refinancing rate at 2.65%, after hiking in September. Christine Lagarde said policymakers debated a hike before deciding to wait for more data, and that the sense of direction was quite clear; Reuters sources said a 17 December hike was all but certain, with a pause expected after it. The decision came hours after Lagarde announced she will step down early, and EUR/USD touched 1.1104, its lowest since May 2025, before recovering.

Why it matters for gold:

The euro carries more than half the weight of the dollar index, so a weak euro on ECB day tends to firm the dollar and weigh on gold. This time the euro bounced and gold did not, which tells you US rates are still the main driver. Our ECB and BoJ decisions guide explains the channel.

Bank of Japan holds at 1.25% in an 8–1 vote and says underlying inflation has reached 2%

The Bank of Japan kept its policy rate at about 1.25% on Friday, with board member Hajime Takata dissenting in favour of a rise to 1.5%. Its Outlook Report described underlying inflation as broadly consistent with the 2% target, with price risks skewed to the upside, and raised the FY2027 core CPI forecast to 2.6% from 2.4%. The bank also agreed to raise the pace of its ETF sales to about ¥860 billion a year from January 2027, investingLive reported.

Why it matters for gold:

Markets read the hold as a hawkish pause that keeps a December hike in play. USD/JPY fell from about 157.6 to 157.1 in the first 15 minutes, then recovered, and gold did not follow the yen higher. Our BoJ decision guide for gold traders has the times, the transmission and if/then paths.

Yields

10-year yield drops to 4.896%, a one-month low, as AI share selling drives a Treasury rally

Selling in AI-related shares after Alphabet’s results pushed investors into Treasuries, and the 10-year yield fell to 4.8958% in Asia on Friday, its lowest in over a month, Reuters reported via Business Recorder. The 30-year yield fell to 5.2623%. The dollar index slipped to 101.77 but was still on course for a 0.3% gain in October, its second monthly rise.

Why it matters for gold:

Lower yields usually help gold, so a one-month low in the 10-year with gold still sliding is worth noting. It suggests December hike odds near 80% and position-squaring at month end are outweighing the yield relief for now. Our real yields and dollar tracker shows both drivers live, and real yields and gold explains the link.

Technicals

Gold heads into Friday's close flat on the week and down about 4% in October

In our COMEX futures data at 03:45 GMT, gold was at $4,004.6, against last Friday’s settlement of $4,007.9, after a week that ranged from $3,990.9 on Monday to $4,097.2 during Warsh’s press conference. From September’s last close of $4,186.7 that is a fall of about $182, or 4.3%, for the month so far. The US Employment Cost Index for Q3 is due at 8:30 am ET today (12:30 GMT, 18:00 IST), the last scheduled US release before the weekly close.

Why it matters for gold:

A week that saw the Fed, PCE, the ECB and the BoJ has left gold almost exactly where it started, sitting on $4,000. How it closes relative to that round number will shape next week’s pivots. Our week-ahead guide for 2–6 November covers NFP, ISM and the US clock change, and the gold forecast updates the weekly levels after the close.
