Gold News, 28 October 2026: 7 stories moving XAUUSD

Gold went into Fed day up about 1% after Tuesday’s rebound, helped by cheaper oil, while the dollar index and the 10-year yield held near their recent highs. The statement is due at 2:00 pm ET (18:00 GMT, 23:30 IST) with no new dot plot this time, so the press conference and any hint about December are what XAUUSD traders will be watching.

Fed day: gold holds above $4,050 as markets price a hold tonight and a December hike

CME FedWatch: 90.6% odds of a hold tonight, 75.1% for a December hike

The CME FedWatch tool showed a 90.6% probability on Tuesday afternoon that the Fed keeps its target range at 3.75% to 4% on Wednesday, up from 84.5% a week earlier and 35.8% a month before, Fox Business reported. For the mid-December meeting the tool showed a 75.1% chance of a 25-basis-point hike. The report pointed to September CPI, which rose 0.6% on the month and 3.7% on the year, as the reason markets still expect another increase.

Why it matters for gold:

A hold is close to fully priced, so tonight’s reaction in XAUUSD is more likely to come from what the Fed signals about December than from the decision itself. Our new guide to what the Fed could signal about a December hike sets out the phrases to watch and if/then paths, and how to read CME FedWatch explains how these odds are calculated.

No dot plot tonight: the Fed's calendar lists projections for December, not October

The Federal Reserve’s meeting calendar marks the 27–28 October meeting without the asterisk that denotes a Summary of Economic Projections, so tonight brings a statement and a press conference but no new dot plot. The next projections are scheduled with the 8–9 December decision, in line with the March, June, September and December pattern of 2025 and 2026. The statement is due at 2:00 pm New York time, which is 18:00 GMT and 23:30 in India.

Why it matters for gold:

Without fresh rate projections, every hint about the next step has to come from the statement wording and the Chair’s answers, which can make the press conference the bigger mover. Our Fed decision time in your time zone table converts both releases to 16 cities, and the glossary explains the dot plot.

Technicals

Gold trades near $4,065 in early Asia, up about 1.15%, with $4,015 and $4,125 in view

Gold rose to near $4,065 early on Wednesday in Asia, up 1.15% on the day, FXStreet reported, as softer oil eased some of the inflation worry behind Fed hike bets. Markets priced a 6.6% chance of a move tonight and 84.4% odds of a December hike, the report said, without naming the tool. On the daily chart it put support at the lower Bollinger band near $4,015 and resistance at the 20-day midline near $4,125, then the 100-day moving average around $4,220, with the 14-day RSI at 41.

Why it matters for gold:

Different trackers and pull times give December odds anywhere from the mid-70s to the mid-80s, so the exact figure matters less than whether tonight moves it. On our own daily map the pivot sits at $4,051.9; the XAUUSD analysis page recalculates it every hour, and the FOMC day playbook covers how to plan around the release.

Oil

Brent slips from about $116 to $113 even as Iran says Hormuz is closed to 'rogue ships'

Brent was around $116 a barrel early on Tuesday and near $113 by late evening, a drop of almost 2% on the day, CBS News reported in its live coverage. Iran’s navy said the Strait of Hormuz was closed to ships that do not coordinate with its authorities, after a tanker struck mines and caught fire. The IAEA chief urged Iran at the UN Security Council to cooperate with inspectors without further delay.

Why it matters for gold:

This autumn oil has hurt gold through inflation expectations, yields and Fed hike odds, so a cheaper barrel on Fed eve took some pressure off XAUUSD. Our guide to gold and oil prices explains the chain, and the glossary covers geopolitical risk.

Data

US consumer confidence jumps to 91.7 in October; inflation expectations ease to 5.8%

The Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Index rose 7.5 points to 91.7 in October from a slightly revised 84.2 in September. The Present Situation Index climbed 8.6 points to 120.4 and the Expectations Index rose 6.9 points to 72.6. Consumers’ 12-month inflation expectations declined to 5.8%, which the Conference Board said remained elevated.

Why it matters for gold:

Stronger confidence argues against any sudden slowdown that would push the Fed to back off, while still-high inflation expectations are exactly what a hawkish committee worries about. Both feed the rate path that drives real yields and gold. Thursday’s PCE inflation report is the next test, and our real yields and dollar tracker shows the drivers.

Yields

$70 billion 5-year auction clears at 4.845%, well below last month's 5.033%

Tuesday’s $70 billion five-year note sale drew a high yield of 4.845% and a bid-to-cover ratio of 2.33, RTTNews reported, against an average of 2.32 for the previous ten five-year auctions. Last month’s sale had yielded 5.033% with a 2.21 bid-to-cover. RTTNews described demand as average.

Why it matters for gold:

Average demand at a lower yield than September is a calmer signal than Monday’s soft 2-year sale. Even so, the yield and dollar backdrop stays firm: in our Yahoo Finance data the 10-year yield closed Tuesday at 4.993% and the dollar index at 102.32, its highest close since 14 October. Our explainers on real yields and gold and gold versus the dollar index cover why both matter.

Indian 24-carat gold rises ₹660 to ₹1,43,950 per 10 grams on Fed day

Goodreturns’ indicative rates for Wednesday put 24-carat gold at ₹1,43,950 per 10 grams, up ₹660 from Tuesday, and 22-carat at ₹1,31,950, up ₹600. The rates exclude GST, TCS and other levies. Tuesday’s 24-carat rate had been ₹14,329 per gram.

Why it matters for gold:

Local rates follow XAUUSD and the rupee, so the overnight rebound above $4,050 showed up straight away. For Indian traders the Fed statement lands at 23:30 IST and the press conference at midnight, so tomorrow morning’s rate will carry the reaction. Our India gold price page shows the local rate, and the best time to trade gold in IST covers the late-night sessions.
