Donchian Channels on Gold: Turtle-Style Breakouts Tested on XAUUSD

The Donchian channel is the simplest breakout tool there is: buy a new high, sell a new low. It is also the basis of the famous Turtle trading rules. We tested four channel lengths on two years of hourly XAUUSD data and on daily data since 2015, with a cost on every trade. On the hourly chart every setting was positive in both years. On the daily chart, every setting lost money from 2015 to 2020.

The short answer

The two classic Donchian settings come from the Turtle traders: a 20-bar breakout with a 10-bar exit and a 55-bar breakout with a 20-bar exit. Many gold traders also use a fast 10/5 and a slow 100/50. On two years of hourly XAUUSD data with a $0.30 per ounce cost per trade, every setting was positive in both years, and 20/10 did best, making money on both long and short trades.

On the daily chart since 2015, the picture was different: all four settings lost money from 2015 to 2020 and made their gains after 2020. Breakouts are a bet that a move will continue, and they work only when the market trends.

What the Donchian channel measures

Richard Donchian’s channel is three lines:

  • Upper band: the highest high of the last N bars
  • Lower band: the lowest low of the last N bars
  • Middle: the average of the two

A close above the upper band is a new N-bar high, a close below the lower band a new N-bar low. There is no smoothing and no averaging of closes, so it shows exactly where recent range limits sit. Exits usually use a shorter channel, so a long is closed when price makes a new, shorter-term low.

For the discretionary version of trading breaks of levels, see our lessons on the breakout and retest strategy and the Asian range breakout.

The Donchian settings gold traders use

Setting Origin or use Character
10 / 5 Short-term breakouts Fast, many trades
20 / 10 Turtle “System 1” lengths Balanced
55 / 20 Turtle “System 2” lengths Slower, bigger trends
100 / 50 Long-term trend following Very slow, few trades

Why gold’s volatility changes things

Gold’s average daily range on COMEX futures was under $10 in 2019, about $34 in 2024, $64 in 2025 and around $123 so far in 2026. Over our hourly test window, ATR(14) averaged $17.49. A Donchian channel has no volatility adjustment of its own, so when gold is quiet the bands are close and false breakouts are cheap but frequent; when it is wild, the bands are far apart and each breakout carries a large distance to the exit channel. That means the stop, which sits at the opposite exit channel, can be very wide. Always size from it using the position size calculator.

We tested 4 Donchian settings on 2 years of hourly gold data

How we tested. COMEX gold futures (GC=F) 1-hour bars from 30 October 2024 to 30 October 2026, 11,445 bars, plus daily bars from January 2015. Rule: go long when the close breaks above the highest high of the previous N bars, short when it breaks below the lowest low; exit a long on a close below the lowest low of the shorter exit channel, and a short on a close above its highest high. Signals are taken on the close and filled at the next bar’s open. Each trade is 1 ounce and pays $0.30 per ounce for spread and slippage. Results are in US dollars per ounce; maximum drawdown is the largest fall in closed-trade equity. Year 1 ends on 30 October 2025.

For context, holding gold gained about $1,194 an ounce in year 1 and about $14 in year 2, with a run to about $5,627 in January 2026 and a heavy fall in between.

What the results say, in plain English

  • Hourly breakouts were among the strongest results in all our tests. All four settings were positive in both years, with drawdowns between about $420 and $590 an ounce, lower than most trend rules we tested.
  • 20/10 was the most balanced. It made money in both years and on both sides: about $1,848 on longs and $741 on shorts. That matters, because a rule that only profits from longs in a bull market is mostly measuring the bull market.
  • The fast 10/5 faded. It made $1,622 in year 1 and $471 in year 2. Faster channels react to more of gold’s violent swings, and many of those reversed.
  • Daily breakouts lost before 2021. Every daily setting lost money from 2015 to 2020, when gold’s daily range was small and it spent long periods in ranges. All the daily profit came after 2020.
  • Small samples again. The 100/50 daily rule took 21 trades in almost 12 years. Its profit factor of 2.21 mostly reflects a few long trends after 2020.

Compared with the ATR-based Keltner Channel breakout, the Donchian rules made more on the hourly chart under the same costs.

How to use Donchian channels on different timeframes

Scalping (M1 to M5). A 20-bar channel on M5 covers less than two hours, so breakouts there are really breaks of the current session’s range. Many scalpers instead mark the Asian or London session range and trade breaks of that, which is the same logic with a meaningful time window. Check what each move is worth with the gold pip calculator.

Intraday (M15 to H1). This is where our test was strongest. 20/10 on H1 is a clean, testable rule. Expect a win rate around 40% and accept that most profit comes from a few strong moves.

Swing (H4 to D1). The Turtle-style 20/10 and 55/20 on daily charts can catch major trends, but our data shows they can also lose for years when gold ranges. Only trade them if you can hold through that kind of stretch.

A combination idea: Donchian breakout with a session filter

  1. Mark the H1 20-bar Donchian channel.
  2. Only act on breakouts during the London or New York session, when liquidity is deepest. Our gold market hours tool shows session times in your zone.
  3. Skip breakouts in the 30 minutes before major US data; check the calendar on the gold news page.
  4. Use the 10-bar exit channel as the stop and size from it with the position size calculator.

The session filter is untested in our study; it is an idea to test, built on the logic of the breakout and retest lesson.

Common mistakes with Donchian channels on gold

  • Expecting a high win rate. Breakout systems lose more often than they win; our best hourly rule won 44% of trades.
  • Abandoning the rule during a range. That is exactly when losses pile up, and exactly before the trend that pays for them.
  • Using a fixed lot size. The distance to the exit channel changes with volatility; size from it every time.
  • Assuming hourly results carry over to daily charts. In our data they did not before 2021.
  • Ignoring weekend gaps. Gold can open beyond your exit channel on Sunday evening.

These results come from simple mechanical rules on past data and are not recommendations. Breakout systems depend on trends, and gold’s 2025–26 period was unusually strong for trends.

Test it yourself

A Donchian rule is one of the easiest strategies to code or test by hand, which makes it a great first backtest. Take one setting, write the entry and exit exactly, and run it on your broker’s XAUUSD data with your own spread. Split the period, check the long and short results separately, and record the longest losing streak. Our lessons on backtesting a gold strategy and backtesting with free data walk through it, and the gold indicator settings hub compares Donchian with 11 other indicators.

Test it with other traders

Breakout trading tests your patience more than your analysis. In the XAUUSD Global community, traders run breakout rules together on demo, compare sessions and keep each other honest through the losing streaks. The first month is free, then $19.99 a month.

Educational content only, not financial advice. Trading gold with leverage carries a high risk of loss.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Donchian channel setting for gold?

On two years of hourly gold data, the 20-bar entry with a 10-bar exit did best: plus $2,588 per ounce over 285 trades after a $0.30 per ounce cost, positive in both years and on both long and short trades. All four settings we tested were positive on the hourly chart in both years.

Do Turtle trading rules work on gold?

Our test used the Turtle-style channel lengths (20/10 and 55/20) but not the full Turtle system with its position sizing and pyramiding. On daily gold since 2015, both lengths were positive overall but lost money from 2015 to 2020 and made their gains after 2020. On hourly gold, both were positive in both years.

What do the two Donchian numbers mean?

The first is the entry channel: the highest high and lowest low of the last N bars. The second is a shorter exit channel. In 20/10, you buy a close above the 20-bar high and exit a long on a close below the 10-bar low.

Why did Donchian breakouts lose on daily gold before 2021?

From 2015 to 2020, gold spent long stretches in ranges and its daily range was much smaller. Breakouts of 10 to 100-day highs and lows often failed and reversed. When gold trended strongly after 2020, the same rules made money.

Is the Donchian channel good for gold day trading?

On the hourly chart it was one of the stronger rules in our tests. The fast 10/5 setting made most of its money in year 1 and much less in year 2, while the 20/10 setting was more even. For intraday trading, breakouts of session ranges are a closely related idea.

How many trades does a Donchian rule make on gold?

On hourly gold over two years: 524 trades for 10/5, 285 for 20/10, 135 for 55/20 and 74 for 100/50. On daily data since 2015, the 100/50 rule made only 21 trades, far too few to judge on its own.
