Trailing stop in gold trading

A trailing stop is a stop-loss that follows price at a set distance as a gold trade moves into profit, locking in gains while leaving room to run.

Also called Trailing stop-loss, Dynamic stop

A trailing stop is a stop-loss that moves with the market. For a long position it rises as price rises, staying a fixed distance below the highest price reached, but never moves down. When price retraces by the trailing distance, the stop is hit and the trade closes. Platforms offer automatic trailing stops set in points; many traders trail manually, moving the stop behind each new swing low or moving average.

How it applies to gold trading

Imagine a long from 4,000 with a $10 trailing stop. If gold rises to 4,030 the stop sits at 4,020. A pullback to 4,020 closes the trade for a $20 gain; a continuation to 4,060 lifts the stop to 4,050. The trailing distance is the key choice: too tight and normal noise closes the trade early; too wide and most of the move is given back. On gold, distances based on ATR are more robust than fixed dollar amounts because volatility changes so much between sessions.

Many automatic trailing stops only operate while the platform is running on the trader’s device, so a closed laptop means no trailing. Check how your platform handles it.

A common mistake

Setting a trailing stop in points when intending dollars. A “50-point” trail on XAUUSD is $0.50, which gold crosses constantly; the trade closes within seconds of moving into profit.

Frequently asked questions

What trailing distance works on gold?

There is no universal figure. Traders commonly use a multiple of ATR, such as 1.5 to 3 times the current 14-period ATR on their trading timeframe, or trail behind structural swing points.

Does a trailing stop work when my platform is closed?

On some platforms the trailing logic runs on the trader’s device and stops when it is offline, leaving the last stop level in place. Server-side trailing stops keep working. Check your platform’s documentation.
