Displacement in gold trading
Displacement is a fast, large-bodied move that breaks structure and leaves a fair value gap; on gold it separates genuine breakouts from liquidity sweeps.
Also called Impulsive move, Expansion, Energetic candle
Displacement is a strong, directional move made up of one or more large-bodied candles with small wicks, typically breaking a swing point and leaving a fair value gap behind. It signals intent: the market did not drift through the level, it drove through it. In ICT methodology, displacement is the quality that makes an order block or FVG worth trading; a zone formed without displacement is treated with suspicion.
How it applies to gold trading
Displacement is the practical test for whether a gold move is a breakout or a sweep. At the London open, if price takes the Asian high with a single large 5-minute candle that closes well above it and the next candle continues, that is displacement and the break has a reasonable chance of holding. If price pokes above the high with a long wick and closes back inside, there is no displacement, and the move is more likely a sweep.
Displacement also validates reversals. After a sweep of a low, a displacement up through the last lower high (a CHoCH with displacement) is a stronger signal than a slow grind through the same level.
A simple objective filter is to require the displacement candle’s body to exceed the current 14-period ATR on that timeframe, which removes most of the marginal cases.
A common mistake
Entering on the displacement candle itself. The candle is confirmation; the entry is on the pullback into the FVG or order block it created, where the stop can be sensibly placed.

Frequently asked questions
How do I recognize displacement on a gold chart?
Large candle bodies relative to recent candles, small wicks, a close beyond a swing point and a fair value gap left behind. Compare the candle size with the current ATR for an objective check.
Does displacement need to happen in a particular session?
No, but displacement during the London and New York killzones is given more weight than moves during the Asian session or the daily break.
