SMT divergence in gold trading
SMT divergence is when gold and a correlated market such as silver or the dollar index disagree at a high or low, suggesting one of the moves is a sweep.
Also called Smart Money Technique divergence, Intermarket divergence, Correlated-pair divergence
SMT divergence (Smart Money Technique) compares two markets that normally move together. If gold makes a new high but silver fails to, or gold makes a new low while the dollar index fails to make a new high, the markets have diverged. The ICT reading is that the market which made the new extreme did so to take liquidity, and the one that did not reveals the underlying intent. SMT is used as confirmation of a sweep, not as a stand-alone signal.
How it applies to gold trading
The usual pairs for gold are silver (should move in the same direction) and the dollar index or a dollar pair such as EURUSD inverted (should move the opposite way). At the London open, if gold sweeps the Asian high but silver stays below its own Asian high, the sweep is suspect, and a CHoCH on gold’s 5-minute chart after that is a higher-probability short than without the divergence. The same logic applies at the New York open and around session lows.
SMT requires charts aligned in time; comparing a gold candle with a silver candle from a different session boundary produces false divergences.
The inducement and SMT lesson on this site shows the comparison on gold and silver charts side by side, with the alignment of candle times that makes the reading valid.
A common mistake
Reading SMT between markets that are not reliably correlated at the time. Gold and the dollar can trend together for weeks; divergence between them then means nothing.

Frequently asked questions
Which markets do I compare with gold for SMT?
Silver is the most common, since it usually moves with gold. The dollar index, or a major dollar pair, is used as an inverse comparison. Check the current correlation before relying on either.
Is SMT divergence a buy or sell signal?
Neither on its own. It raises the probability that a sweep is a reversal rather than a breakout, and is usually combined with a structure shift and an entry zone.
