OTE in gold trading

OTE, the optimal trade entry, is the 62% to 79% Fibonacci retracement zone of an impulsive gold swing, where ICT-style traders look for continuation entries.

Also called Optimal trade entry, 62–79% retracement

OTE (optimal trade entry) is an ICT concept defining the preferred retracement zone for a continuation trade: between the 61.8% and 78.6% Fibonacci levels of the last impulsive swing, with 70.5% as the midpoint. The reasoning is that a pullback this deep is in a clear discount (for longs) but has not broken the swing low that would invalidate the trend, so the stop can be close and the target far.

How it applies to gold trading

Consider a 15-minute gold rally from 3,960 to 4,000 after a liquidity sweep and a CHoCH. The OTE zone is 4,000 − $40 × 0.618 = 3,975.30 down to 4,000 − $40 × 0.786 = 3,968.60. A long in that zone, with a stop below 3,960 and a target at the next buy-side liquidity above 4,000, risks roughly $10 to $15 for a reward of $25 or more. If an order block or fair value gap sits inside the OTE, the zone is considered stronger.

OTE works best during the killzones and in the direction of the higher-timeframe bias. In a ranging market the retracement often overshoots the zone and takes the swing low instead.

A common mistake

Drawing the Fibonacci on the wrong swing. OTE should be measured on the impulsive leg that broke structure, not on an arbitrary high and low.

Frequently asked questions

What Fibonacci levels define the OTE?

The zone between 61.8% and 78.6% retracement of the impulsive swing. Many traders also mark 70.5% as the center of the zone.

Does OTE work on gold?

It gives a defined entry zone with a logical stop, which is what any method needs. Its success rate on gold depends on choosing the right swing, trading with the higher-timeframe bias and timing entries in active sessions.
