Margin call in gold trading

A margin call is a platform's warning that your margin level has fallen to a set threshold, often 100%, and that further losses may trigger a stop-out.

Also called Margin warning

A margin call is a notification that an account’s margin level has reached a predefined warning threshold. On many retail platforms that threshold is 100%, meaning equity has fallen to equal the margin locked up by open positions. The call itself does not close anything; it tells the trader to add funds or reduce positions before the stop-out level is reached.

How it applies to gold trading

Gold’s dollar ranges make margin calls arrive faster than many traders expect. An account with $3,000 equity holding 0.50 lots at 100:1 uses $2,000 of margin at a $4,000 price. Margin level starts at 150%. A $20 adverse move ($1,000 loss) brings equity to $2,000 and margin level to 100%: margin call. Gold can cover $20 in a few minutes around US data.

Historically a margin call was a phone call from a broker demanding more money. Today it is usually an email, an in-platform alert or a color change on the terminal. Some platforms skip the warning entirely and go straight to the stop-out level.

Prop firms and funded accounts rarely use margin calls at all; their equivalent is the daily loss limit and maximum drawdown rule, which usually trigger long before the margin level becomes a concern.

A common mistake

Responding to a margin call by depositing more money to keep an oversized losing position open. That increases the amount at risk rather than fixing the sizing error that caused the call.

Frequently asked questions

Does a margin call close my gold trades?

Usually not. It is a warning. Positions are closed automatically only when the margin level falls further, to the stop-out level.

How do I avoid margin calls on gold?

Size positions from a risk percentage and a stop distance, not from available margin. A trade risking 1% of the account cannot bring the margin level anywhere near 100%.
